Brits Win 10-Meet Florida Circuit

In its best performance this year, the British national 4-way team "Sebastian XL" won the final meet of the Florida Skydiving League, and then won the jump-off round against "Deland Genesis" to claim the league championship.

Six of the league's eight teams competed May 16 at Skydive Deland. XL won the meet easily, averaging 19.2 points over six rounds, almost three points above their season average. XL team members are Pete Allum, Lee Love, John McIver, Toby Stafford and Ian Brown. Genesis - with Ian Bobo, Kyle Collins, Shannon Pilcher, David van Greuningen and Troy Keys - had its best meet, too, despite losing six points to busts in the first two rounds. Genesis entered the meet two points ahead of XL in the overall standings. A second place finish was all the team needed to secure the league championship. And after six rounds, it looked like Genesis had clinched the victory. But one team's scores were missing from the score board. The team, "Club Sam" , had completed all six rounds, but then had to rejump round one because of a video malfunction. League organizer Kurt Gaebel could not calculate the team's handicap until the first round was scored. When the scores were finally tallied, Club Sam had finished second, knocking Genesis into third, and into a jump-off with XL. Club Sam team members included Jene Fletcher, Angie McGreevy, Mike Truffer and Val Walton.

Genesis entered the jump-off with a 2.5 handicap, meaning XL had to win by at least three points. XL lived up to the challenge, defeating Genesis 18 to 15. XL pocketed $1,400 for the victory, as well as gold medals and the PD Cup, the FSL's new perpetual trophy. Genesis won silver medals and was also recognized as the league's most improved team. Both teams - Genesis and XL - finished the season with 60 league points. "ZSpot" from Zephyrhills finished third with 54 points. ZSpot team members are Mike and Wendy Hoogsteden, Ellen Jamett, Jim Vandevelden and T.K. Hayes.
