Sebastian - Skydiving may not yet be an Olympic event, but it's been officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a viable sport. Florida is one of the premier sites for skydiving competition in the country and this Sunday, the Florida Skydiving League will hold the second of their eight regular season meets at Skydive Sebastian, at 400 W. Airport Drive. The event begins at 9 a.m. and is free to spectators, who can hang out on the sundeck, eat at the restaurant or visit the bar while several teams from across the state and around the world compete. Sebastian XL, the British national champions that represent Skydive Sebastian, will be there as well as the DeLand PD Blue team, skydiving champions for the past three years.
An all-female Swedish team, "Four Pleasure" also will compete as well as several other teams. The more teams that compete, the better, said John McIver, a member of Sebastian XL. "It's great because there's a big difference between training and competition," he said. "When a lot of teams compete, we get a chance to gauge what we have to work on." Kurt Gaebel, director of the National Skydiving League, also known as the "PGA for skydiving," said Florida is the central location for many league teams to practice and compete because of the weather.
