what: Florida Skydiving League Grande Finale

where: Skydive City, Zephyrhills

when: Sunday, 9 a.m.

at stake: FSL champion qualifies for National Skydiving League Championships in November

The skydivers falling from above Skydive City tomorrow morning will have more at stake than the ones you can see almost every day when driving near the drop zone. Insyead of thrill seeking, they will be jumping for a spot in the Nattional Skydiving League Championships, which take place later this year in DeLand.

The Florida Skydiving League is in town for its Grande Finale, the last meet of the season. The league holds 12 meets each season with the overall champions advancing to the national championships. This weekend, four-person teams from around the state are leaping for more than $5,000 in prize money as well as the chance to advance.

The top local team is Zephyrhills ZSpot, which features Mike Hoogsteden, Wendy hoogsteden, Ellen Jamett and Jim Vandevelden. The foursome is tied for fourth with Space Center Tonic in the FSL season standings. Two DeLand teams have secured the Nos. 1 and 2 spots in the final overall standings, but ZSpot is in the hunt with Space Center Tonic and DeLand Chain Gang for a bronze medal. The Chain Gang team is only three points ahead of ZSpot and Space Center. Last year, ZSpot enjoyed its best season in the three-year league by advancing to the U.S. Parachute Association national championships and winning an advanced-class title.

Sunday's event is free to the public. Teams compete in three divisions: Open Class, Advanced Class and Intermediate Class. The four=person teams - skill level determining class - compete in six rounds. Each round consists of one jump per team in which each team has 35 seconds to complete a sequence of formations. The jumps are videotaped and scoring is based on a review of the tape. For information, call Skydive City at (813)783-9399.
