... that bad weather shortened the FSL meet at Skydive City?
posted Jun 27th, 2008 -
Last weekend's leaderboard shows a unique situation in the AAA Class field. Team Teiwaz appears two times on the same leaderboard, and coincidence places both lineups right next to each other.
This is not a mistake. Teiwaz actually competed with two different lineups at two different locations. Jim "Bu" Klinge, Rodney Cruce, Sean Sweeney and Kurt Gaebel competed at the Paraclete XP Money Meet 2008 in Raeford, while Derrick Thomas, Bruce Robertson, Bob Byrne and Dave Ruffell attended the June meet of the Florida Skydiving League at Skydive City.
Teiwaz in North Carolina had better luck with the weather and completed all ten rounds, plus ten rounds of the indoor competition. Teiwaz in Florida was bothered by bad weather and completed only one single round on Saturday.
The teams on the overall leaderboard of each meet weekend are ranked by the meet average. The Teiwaz lineup at Skydive City finished with a 17-point average after the 17-pointer in Round 1, while the lineup in Raeford posted a 15.7 average after ten rounds. Teiwaz Florida ended up one spot ahead of Teiwaz North Carolina.
Six teams made the trip to Skydive City. Teiwaz member Bob Byrne managed the event, and former Golden Knight Kirk Knight was the event judge. Teams and management tried hard to beat the weather and did not get too far. Clouds and rain allowed only the completion of one and a half round. Then the teams gave up after a weather hold of more than three hours and a worsening weather situation.
Especially the AA Class competition was set to become an interesting race, as the leaderboard shows. The two FSL teams, FSC Wind Damaged and Z-4, did not only end up on the top of the leaderboard due to the very short meet. FSC Wind Damaged posted the sole highscore of Round 1 in the 20-team field, and Z-4's 11-pointer was the second highest score in the same round.
FSC Wind Damaged followed up with another top score in Round 2 before the meet in Zephyrhills was over. Only Ranch Delusion beat the 13-pointer of the Lake Wales team with a 15-pointer. FSC Wind Damaged was in a good position to maintain the top position after more rounds, and Z-4 was ready to challenge the Lake Wales team round by round.
A Class team Zero Tolerance Miami had to replace Pam Manos who had a sinus congestion. Gyorgy Koncz took her slot. He was also competing with a new Rookie Class team from Skydive Miami in Homestead, Evolution Miami (Lourdes Coello - Tail, Brian Feero - Point, Danny Guida - Center Inside, Gyorgy Koncz - Center Outside, Alex Uriarte - Camera). Gyorgy Koncz had already had his FSL debut with ZT Mal4mations at the FSL May meet in Sebastian. Zero Tolerance Miami could not keep up with the amazing A Class scores of the Dutch teams at the Tomscat Trophy. However, the 8-pointer in Round 1 was very competitive and the highest scores of all US teams in the A Class last weekend.
The new Rookie Class team from Skydive Miami could complete only one round for the first meet experiences and ended up in the middle of the field with the 5-pointer. Evolution Miami will be back for more on home turf next month when the Florida Skydiving League visits Skydive Miami in Homestead for the first time.
The other Rookie Class team at Skydive City, a SOCOM lineup (Garth Arevalo - Center Outside, Sam Brasfield - Point, Andy Burch - Tail, David Culpepper - Center Inside, Russ McDonald - Camera), completed two rounds before the bad weather stopped the meet.
The SOCOM team ended up on the top of the Rookie Class leaderboard with a 10.5 meet average. Carolina Groove and the Dutch team Bedazzled both had higher averages after two rounds. However, lower scores in the following rounds made these teams' meet averages drop below the SOCOM average. The 4-way competitors of the Special Operations Command, headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida, can enjoy the honor of holding the top position of last weekend's leaderboard in the Rookie Class.
