Did You Know...

... that Air Force Intrepid went from 9.9 to 22.8?

posted Jan 8th, 2012 - There were actually some 4way scores that were posted even earlier in 2012 than the indoor competition at the Sportsflight Skydive Arena in Prague, Czech Republic. They came from the USPA Collegiates 2011 at Skydive Arizona in Eloy.

The Collegiates usually take place just around the turn of the year and often reach into the first days of the new year. However, they belong realistically to the previous season, as the US college teams consider the event their championship and the conclusion of the skydiving year.

1Air Force Intrepid 17 17 18 30 3211422.8
2West Point Indifference 10 14 13 29 339919.8
Most of the teams usually form their lineups just for this event and do not attend other meets during the regular competition season, with a few exceptions. This time there was only one exception, and the winning team in the Open Class, Air Force Intrepid, had also competed at the USPA Nationals 2011.

There was an enormous scoring difference (9.9 - 22.8) between the Intrepid average at the USPA Nationals 2011 and the results at the Collegiates. It has a very simple explanation. The 9.9 average came with the 9th place in USPA's Intermediate Class, which is identical with the AA Class dive pool and rules and challenges the teams with 16 of the 22 blocks.

Intrepid posted the 22.8 average in December 2011/January 2012 applying the Collegiates dive pool and rules, which is identical with the A Class and much easier. The exact competition draw for the five/six rounds was not available, however, the A Class has only eight blocks in the dive pool, and the sequences are either three or four formations long.

There are also two different leaderboards at the Collegiates, even though the competition draw is identical for both categories. The situation is the same as for the AAA Class teams at the USPA Nationals where the Open Class and the Advcanced Class actually applies the same rules and dive pools. Only the qualification criteria is different.
