Did You Know...

... that a team from Finland took the top spot in the A Class?

Umppa Lumpat after a competition jump
posted Jun 26th, 2012 - Last weekend's leaderboard is complete, and no event was weathered out. In fact, the weather was almost perfect at each of the five different locations in the USA (Chicago, Northern Plains, Carolina) and Europe (Finland, Czech Republic). The meets were all completed with a few exceptions of a few teams. The Rookie Class teams of the Carolina Skydiving League have only four rounds on their meet agenda.

It turned out to be a big weekend for a team from a small skydiving country. Umppa Lumpat from Finland finished on the top of the A Class leaderboard, and it was neither a weak participation nor a weak leaderboard. A total of seven teams competed in this category, five in the Northern Plains Skydiving League and an additional one in the Czech Republic.

Finnish A Class team Umppa Lumpat
Umppa Lumpat, with Lasse Riikola, Ilpo Suominen, Antti Jokela, Ulla Jämsä and Janne Lindstedt on camera last weekend, completed only five rounds, while the rest of the A Class field completed six rounds. However, the team from Finland was also in 1st place and two points ahead of Plug It In Anywhere after five rounds of all teams. The rankings on the overall leaderboards are calculated by meet averages.

It may have been the first time that a team from Finland finished in first place on a meet weekend with multiple events. The Pro Team, Finland's national 4way team, was one of the best amateur teams in the world until the World Meet 2010 in Menzelinsk, Russia. However, the AAA Class leaderboard is a much more challenging one to take the first place on at any time.

Umppa Lumpat made it to this top position by increasing the meet average from 4.0 in May to 6.4 last weekend. Along with it came a new team record for a single round and the first 2-digit number with the 10-pointer in Round 2.

The main reason for Umppa Lumpat's top spot were the first two rounds where the team from Finland posted sole highscores and created a 4-point lead.

Three other A Class teams won the remaining four rounds, but none of them could catch up with the leader.

A new Rookie Class team in Finland must have been inspired by the Umppa Lumpat performance in Jamijarvi. Nollat Tauluun also finished with a very respectable performance and the 3rd place on the Rookie Class leaderboard. Five teams competed at three different locations in this category.

The teams from Finland are now going back to Utti for the next competition in July.
