Did You Know...

... that Airfix Fehrbellin had to work harder this year to win the Nord Cup?

Awards at the German Nationals 2012

posted Sep 20th, 2012 - Last weekend's overall leaderboard also included new scores from Germany.

The German 4way teams who competed at the first part of the Nord Cup in May had shaken up the international leaderboard quite well and mixed up with teams from Texas and the Northern Plains. This time, the two teams from Carolina and the five teams from Germany finished in perfect order, and the US teams took the two top spots.

However, the German teams were not looking that much across the Atlantic last weekend. They completed the second part of the Nord Cup project, which took place at the same location where the German Nationals 2012 were hosted in August, at YUU Skydive. Three teams visited there again, while the two other teams competed only at the two Nord Cup events.

The three teams on the top of the German leaderboard finished in exactly the same positions at both events. It was not too difficult for the organizers of the Nord Cup to determine the 2012 overall winner, which is the home team of the other Nord Cup host, Airfix from Take Off Berlin-Fehrbellin.

Airfix won both events, but it was not a walk in the park at all. Four points had separated Airfix from Wolf Pack on home turf in May, which is not a great distance in an 8-round meet. Last weekend, Airfix had to work even harder to fend off the same challenger and ended up with a 2-point victory, again after eight rounds.

Wolf Pack began to catch up in Round 7 but had given away two many of the earlier rounds. One or two more jumps might have changed the final outcome, but it was too late, and Airfix repeated the 2011 victory, which had exactly the same rankings at both meets. However, Wolf Pack and Black Moon both have moved closer to Airfix, and the rankings may change for the first time at next year's Nord Cup.

Nord Cup 2012 winner: Airfix Fehrbellin

None of the Nord Cup teams played any serious role in the national championships four weeks earlier, and Nord Cup winner Airfix did not even go there. That's no surprise, as many of the leagues and 4way projects are there and meant for the local and regional teams who do not want to travel or attend any of the high-profile competitions.

Three of the five teams still attended the German Nationals 2012 in August, of course including the YUU home team. YUUnited4 had competed in the German AA/Intermediate Class in August and stepped up into the AAA Class last weekend where the four other teams had competed in May. United4 won the bronze medals at the German Nationals but could not keep up with the three Nord Cup top teams in the AAA Class.

The 2012 competition season has now come to an end in Germany, and the national teams continue with their preparations for the Mondial 2012 in Dubai.
