Did You Know...

... that Carolina Turbo XP is going full time this year?

NSL Talk with VTSD at the USPA Nationals 2009
posted Jan 24th, 2013 - The NSL News story on 22 November 2012 brought news about the new "US Shooting Star" in 4way competition, Carolina Turbo XP. The NSL News has followed the team since it was born in 2009, and it has been a very impressive story which doesn't seem to end.

"VTSD", as the team name was in 2009, attended a total of eight meets that year. It began with a 29.3 average in the Rookie Class competition of the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship and ended with Intermediate Class gold medals at the USPA Nationals 2009. VTSD/Turbo went through three competition categories (Rookie - A - AA) in the same year and won in the highest one, the AA Class.

A year later, the same lineup competed in the AAA Class and won the gold medals in USPA's Advanced Class. Turbo had to move up into the Open Class competition at the USPA Nationals 2010 and placed 12th. Another year later it was the 7th place in USPA's 2012 Open Class competition in Eloy. And that's not the end yet...

NSL News visit in Chester in 2010
The NSL News posted the team update in November due to the impressive progression of the team. The plans for the 2013 season were not known at that point in time. Turbo's 2013 schedule and planning is complete now, and it will be another very exciting year for the young team, the "US 4way Shooting Star".

Carolina Turbo XP is making the next step on the way to become 4way world champions one day. Doug Barron (Center Outside), Joey Coffineau (Tail), Joey Freeman (Center Inside) and Andrew Happick (Point) decided to become full time skydivers this year. Chad Wilcox continues to shoot video for the team.

Turbo will attend the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2013 next weekend and then the Paraclete XP Outdoor Championship 2013 in March. The NSL News will compare the scores with the 2012 results at the same events, which will indicate where Turbo can go this year. Here is a summary of the 2012 season and the Turbo plans.

AAA/Open Class in 2011
Carolina Turbo XP once again had a fantastic showing at this year’s USPA Nationals. After a mediocre performance in 2011, CTXP stepped it up again and posted some impressive scores in 2012. With only a 15.0avg in 2011, Turbo continued their upward progression by scoring 179 points in 2012- a very respectable increase. In addition, the Turbo program’s new 8way team, TurbOcho, managed to win the gold medal in 8way Intermediate. The team scored 105 points, with a 15pt score in the second round!

The 2013 season will be a very big one for Carolina Turbo XP. This year the team is taking a huge leap forward in announcing their first full-time training schedule! The team will start jumping in March, and will train Wed-Fri, while working as Tandem/AFF instructors on the weekends. Every 5th week of the season will be a 5-day jump camp in which outside coaching will be brought in. This full time schedule will also include 2nd team rigs to allow for back-to-back loads and huge jump numbers!

This season will also allow CTXP to wind-tunnel train during the week, reducing the number of days taken away from jump training. Most of 2013’s tunnel training will be done with rigs. The team is planning to do roughly 650 jumps and 12-15 tunnel hours… nearly three times as many jumps as any season previous. Lofty yet attainable average goals are set for 2013. Stay tuned!

7th place at the USPA Nationals 2012
Carolina Turbo XP regularly holds wind tunnel training camps exclusively at ParacleteXP. This season’s first camp in December was very successful, with 2-on-2 as well as individual flying skills coaching. The team will be holding a camp once per month through April, although additional camps may be added as demand is continuing to increase. Turbo’s clientele is rapidly expanding further up and down the east coast and the next tunnel camp includes skydivers from Skydive Orange, Virginia Skydiving Center, Chambersburg Skydiving Center, and various Georgia DZ’s. CTXP’s reach will only continue to spread as the team marches forward through the ranks of open-class 4way.

In 2012, Carolina Turbo XP’s 8way team made its debut at the USPA Nationals by winning Intermediate 8way. The team will continue to train in 2013 as they enter the open class. Six of the original members will remain, while the final two replacements are finalized over the coming weeks. It looks like Turbo 8way is here to stay….

Next weekend: Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2013
The last few months of 2012 proved to be rather busy as far as media coverage of the Turbo program. USPA’s annual calendar features CTXP over a spectacular cloud display as the photo for April 2013. With only twelve photos selected from an entire year of skydiving in the US, this is quite an accomplishment for the team. Also, an NSL article from Nov. 22 2012 describes CTXP’s excellent performance and regards the team as one of the up and coming top open class competitors.

The January 2013 issue of Parachutist contains the multi-page coverage of 2012 Nationals, in which Turbo8 is featured with half page photo. In addition to these items, November 2012 Parachutist featured a centerfold photo of CTXP and friends as they built the cancer ribbon overtop Skydive Carolina in order to promote breast cancer awareness and celebrate those who have defeated the disease.

This year Turbo members are planning to build three 3v1 player-coach teams with local jumpers and other jumpers from nearby DZ’s. The teams will have small 60-90 jump seasons with a few tunnel hours, geared mainly towards introducing newer jumpers to structured skydive training and the sport of competitive 4way. The teams will compete in CaSL meets with the option to go to USPA Nationals. An official player-coach release will soon follow this update.
