Did You Know...

... that three generations of Danish national teams competed in Bedford last month?

15 teams in Bedford for the Danish Indoor Nationals
posted Nov 4th, 2013 - Three judges, one organizer and a staggering number of 68 competitors traveled to Bedford on the last October weekend to compete at the Danish Indoor Championships. The total number of participants turned out to be 15 4way and four Freeflying teams, seven teams in the AAA Class and eight in the A class. It was the 4th and the largest Danish indoor championship so far, even bigger than the outdoor nationals.

Event organizer Kjetil Nordin reported that the teams arrived on Thursday and Friday and completed a total of 20 training hours before the competition started on Saturday evening. He said that the competition draw was made beforehand due to a very tight time schedule.

The ten sequences were very well received by the teams, and the A Class draw included four sequences with only Random Formations. The AAA Class teams also had a Super Sequence in Round 7, which was drawn out of the hat as all other sequences.

Three generations of national teams on the podium
The AAA Class competition featured a showdown between two lineups with the most experienced 4way competitors of Denmark, the two previous national teams between 2004 and 2012, Voluntas Reunion and Firebrigade.

Firebrigade consisted of three former DaneZ members, plus former Voluntas member Flemming Andersen. Firebrigade came back with almost exactly the same lineup that won last year's Danish indoor championship with a 21.5 record average for Denmark. Mikael Toft, Jesper Rasmussen, Flemming Andersen and Brian Gregersen competed under VolDaneZ at the 2012 event.

Showdown rival Voluntas Reunion had to replace a sick team member this year, and Maria Ondracek, former Airplay Point, replaced Kasper Svanekiar with less than a 12-hour notice.

Kjetil Nordin said that there was also a lot of anticipation of how the two newly elected national project teams would perform (VAF Warriors - Aerodyne Steam), compared to the national outdoor championships in July: "They are still underdogs on the way up, but there was a chance that they might interfere with the two top teams."

He said that there were battles for the medals throughout the whole competition, and national B-Team Aerodyne Steam impressed in some rounds, especially the one with the Super Sequence, where Steam outscored the new national team VAF Warriors by two points.

The VAF Warriors on the other hand kept within striking distance of the silver medal position almost all the way to the finish line and ended up only five points behind Voluntas Reunion.

Organizer Kjetil Nordin was impressed with the Danish scores: "I have never seen a competition in such a small country where a team had to break the 20.0 average mark to get on the podium."

Firebrigade won the meet with a 22.6 average, which beat last year's record number by 11 points. Voluntas Reunion came in 2nd with the first female 4way competitor in Denmark breaking the 20-average mark. VAF Warrior Anne-Mine Moller Petersen also finished with a 20.0 average. Kjetil Nordin pointed out that all Danish 20-point competitors were on the podium except Kasper Svanekiar.

The A Class competition also included everything a meet needs to be exciting, Kjetil Nordin reported: "We had exciting battles for the medals, thrilling unplanned moves, and most of all a team of videographers flying their camera suits..."

Kjetil Nordin said that Why Nut's? had become an audience favorite after signing up for the meet: "They did not disappoint us. Especially their execution of Block 2 and Block 4 was awesome. They would't risk moving the 3way and let the Point fly all around the stationary piece. At some points in time, they were actually close to a medal position, but eventually settled in 5th place."

AirRush was one of the top contenders for A Class gold, a combination of Bomb Squad and Center Jump, who placed 4th and 3rd at the Danish Nationals 2013. Winner KakaPoe had two new members since the national outdoor championships.

AirRush had the lead once after Round 3 before KakaPoe took over control of performance and leaderboard. Kjetil Nordin also pointed out the SOS + 1 performance: "They deserve credit after multiplying their score by 9 compared to last year. They scored a total of five points in 2012 and finished with 45 points."
