Did You Know...

... that the Mideast Skydiving League launched the 2009 season successfully?

AA Class team Tenacity
posted May 28th, 2009 - In spite of a weather forecast that predicted rain, thunderstorms, cats & dogs living together, and the end of civilization as we know it, five teams came out to enjoy a full Memorial Day weekend of jumping. All six rounds were completed with plenty of time left to enjoy the evening. Most of the teams have been in some form of training this spring. Members of Fastrax and Wait & See were donating their time to assist the young teams with engineering, exit and flying tips.

In the AA Class, our new ladies team, Tenacity, exploded out of the gate to take the day with 48 points. They've been working very hard this spring, fighting multiple weekends of single training days due to weather. The veterans Almost Tight have returned after several years doing other things to show that they still have some chops even after a long layoff. It'll be very interesting to see how these two teams develop over the summer.

A Class team Grippers
We have one team in the A Class, Grippers, who have been doing intense training all winter long for the collegiate championship. They had to deal with a different set of rules going into this meet, and changed their exits from always a star to whatever the meet demanded. This added significant challenges to them, which they met with aplomb and determination. For their first meet ever, and with handicaps, they did an excellent job.

In the Rookie division, Abba and You've Got Points, We've Got Beer both appeared in their first meet. Abba has been training at Start this spring, and for their opening meet, one of their members was scheduled at the last minute to attend a training seminar for the day of the competition. (On a LONG WEEKEND?) So their player-coach, Niklas stepped up to assist. Niklas cracks a mean whip, and they were through the meet with Tenacity in short order. I'm impressed with the discipline of this group in spite of their tender years in the sport.

The visiting team, You've Got Points, We've Got Beer thoroughly enjoyed themselves during the day, taking advantage of the available coaching, and showing this videographer a good time. They were a joy to have on the DZ, and fun to hang with.

In the judging area, National USPA Judge Randy Connell donated his time and expertise to us so that we have proper review of the proceedings.

For the judging technology, the multiple formats presented us with a number of significant challenges. Eric Boerger and Scott Shell both stepped up to the plate with equipment and smarts, making it possible for Randy to record and judge the rounds efficiently. Gentlemen, you have my thanks and my gratitude.

Everyone is looking forward to Meet 2 in one month. Blue skies!

Mike Ashley, MESL Director
