Did You Know...

... that the FSL teams competed on the hottest day of the year?

Heat index of 110' in Z-Hills
posted Jun 24th, 2009 - The first update from Skydive City in Z-Hills, host of the Florida Skydiving League's June meet, came already on Sunday, including the videos of Rounds 1 and 2, plus a photo gallery with team photos and snapshots.

Rounds 3 and 4 have now been uploaded, as well, and they show more of the three AAA and two AA Class that endured the first day of the new Florida summer with record temperatures. The heat index was at 110', and the only refreshing time was the ride to jump altitude.

The two Teiwaz visitors from New Jersey, MidAtlantic Skydiving League competitors Cherie and Karl Schuch, were naturally more surprised by the brutal heat than the FSL competitors. They recently bought a house in the Sebastian area and plan to spend more time in Florida, especially in the winter.

Teiwaz lineup with Cherie and Karl Schuch
Cherie and Karl Schuch have been managing the MidAtlantic Skydiving League affairs for many years and are passionate 4-way competitors at the same time. The NSL News had reported their newest team project, Cross Keys Inferno, with the story on 11 May 2009.

Teiwaz member and FSL Director Kurt Gaebel did not hesitate a second to invite the Schuchs to join the Teiwaz lineup for the meet in Z-Hills when they mentioned their visit to Florida last weekend. Cherie and Karl Schuch have now become Teiwaz members #58 and #59.

The Teiwaz slots for the meet were discussed Saturday morning, and Cherie Schuch went back to her former Point slot where she joined her husband Karl in the front piece. She is currently flying the Center Inside position for Cross Keys Inferno. Bob Byrne took the driver's seat, with piece partner Kurt Gaebel in the Tail slot.

Rock Paper Scissors with Keith and Yvette Walter
The results were more than respectable, as Cherie and Karl Schuch have spent limited time in the AAA Class competition on this scoring level. They had posted an 11.4 average with Cross Keys O2 Project in the AAA/Open Class competition of the USPA Nationals 2004 and an 11.9 average in the AAA/Advanced Class in 2006.

Then they helped Air Pollution to the gold medals in the AA/Intermediate Class at the USPA Nationals 2007 with a 12.6 average.

They came back to the AAA Class competition in 2008, but the Wind Shear team project produced AAA scores (12.2) only at one of the MASL meets last year. Cross Keys Inferno has the potential to score on a significantly higher level. For now, the 13.5 average with Teiwaz is a good start into the 2009 competition season. The MidAtlantic Skydiving League launches the 2009 season this upcoming weekend.

Rock Paper Scissors had the team's real debut in the AAA Class competition last weekend. The team with former Colorado and Carolina Skydiving League Director Keith Walter and his wife Yvette had competed in the AA Class competition at previous meets. Steve Rand was in the Point slot, and James "Bu" Klinge guided Rock Paper Scissors through the first meet in the AAA Class.

DiZturbia breaks a few sweats on the creepers
James "Bu" Klinge has also been coaching the new all-female lineup DiZturbia this year. All team members were new to the AAA Class dive pool when they started the 2009 season at the April meet of the Florida Skydiving League with an 8.5 meet average.

The coach had to step in for Jaime Cruce who was not available last weekend. He could not control the DiZturbia performance from his Point slot and had to follow Laura Song's leadership in the Center Inside position. She still pushed her team forward to a 10.3 average. Coach Klinge now wants DiZturbia to show that the team can do the same with the original lineup.

DiZaster scoring progression
Team DiZaster is the busiest Rookie Class team of the 2009 season so far and has not missed a meet yet. The results are obvious, as the Z-Hills team has consistently improved the meet average without much training.

The Rookie Class teams had great help this time. Veteran coach Robert Chromy visisted from DeLand and was in charge to help the teams and competitors on competition site. Team DiZaster has now arrived at an 8.7 average, and chances are good to finally break the 10.0 benchmark at one of the next meets.

Z Hooligans with FSL coach Robert Chromy
Z Hooligans is a new Rookie Class lineup from Skydive City with two members (Ryan Anderson, Wendy Manning) who already competed with Last Minute Z at the FSL May meet in Sebastian.

The new team started with the first scoring point in Round 1 this time, while the team in Sebastian had scored the only point at the last minute at the May meet.

Z Hooligans peaked on their home turf when the temperatures were on the highest level, as well. The 4- and 5-pointers in Rounds 3 and 4 came in the middle of the day and under the brutal summer sun around noon. This must have been exhausting, as the scores then went back to the level of the first two rounds in the afternoon...

Rounds 3 and 4 can now be viewed on NSL YouTube TV, the videos of Rounds 5 and 6 will be added soon.
