... that Part 2 of Roy Janssen's Hayabusa story goes back to Prostejov?

posted Oct 16th, 2014 - The Sun Path Products NSL News reported on 13 October 2014 that NMP-PCH Hayabusa's tail Roy Janssen is leaving the reigning 4-way world champions from Belgium.

The story explained how Roy Janssen came to that decision and mentioned that an update will follow with his plans for the future.

There is one more step before Hayabusa's new situation and Roy Janssen's plans will become the next topics.

The Sun Path Products NSL News has brought the actual meet experiences of teams and the insider view to the audience many times, including reviews by Hayabusa members after earlier meets.

Roy Janssen's last competition with the new world champions was his most successful one, and he now explained in detail the road from the beginnings in 2004 to the gold medals in Prostejov.

First world meet in Croatia 2004
Hayabusa's first World Championship was in Croatia 2004, where we tried to be the best amateur team in the world. Six world championships later, we wanted the become the best 4-way team in the world. We were successful at several occasions, like winning the bronze medals in Maubeuge 2008, and losing the world title by just one point in Dubai 2012. For this year, we would be the favorites to win the title, and we felt that this would be our year.

"We kept the same lineup from the World Championship in Dubai, so all the gained experiences of the last years could be used, and this time it wasn't us that had to bring up a new team member. We knew that we had this advantage, and that we still had to work hard to stay ahead of our opponents.

"Going into the meet we all felt confident and strong, trusting ourselves and our team mates. This year had been very successful for us, winning all the competitions that we attended, the Wind Games, Paraclete XP Indoor and World Challenge for the 4th time in a row. You can see that those are all indoor meets, which still is another thing than skydiving. We knew that we were a very strong indoor team, undefeated for five years, and people recognize this achievement as well.

1-point behind Airspeed in Dubai 2012
"Often it was said that Hayabusa wasn't as strong outdoors as in the tunnel, which is true, because we had never won a world championship. However, sometimes people forget that we lost the world meet in Dubai by just one point when Airspeed became the world champions. Dubai 2012 gave us strength and confidence. We would take this into our training, mentally as well as physically.

"Until now we were always underdogs going into a world meet, which is mentally a very different game compared to arriving as absolute favorites. Many people said, no worries guys, you will win for sure. It is great to have a lot of support, and our fans had no doubt that we would win. However, it is not them who need to win the championship, and they don't need to deal with the pressure and expectations.

"It felt like they underestimated our opponents. We were fully aware that there were many strong and experienced teams with the same goal - winning the world championship. It's never easy to win it, you still need to prove it. But we were eager to start the competition, to get one step closer to achieve our goal of 12 years.

"We expected that Airspeed, France and Evolution would be our strongest rivals. Usually it takes a few rounds to see where everyone stands, to know if you need to fight back, or if you are in the lead. This world meet became the first one in Hayabusa history where we had the lead in Round 1.

"This was really great, as we usually had to fight back from the start. There we were, finally having the advantage of an early lead. Round by round we started to pull away from the rest of the field. Airspeed and Evolution had their good battle for second place this time.

"I think I can say that Evolution was the surprise of the meet. They showed some big potential for the future, while they were even competing in two events, FS and VFS. Towards the end we had pulled away from Airspeed and had a comfortable lead, even though comfortable never really exists in this kind of competition. You never know what will happen, and being in the lead with a few rounds to go, it puts some extra pressure on the team. In this position, you can only lose compared to the other teams.

"The last two rounds were planned for the last day of the competition. After Round 8 we were leading by nine points, which rationally seems fantastic and would almost take away the pressure on the team. Trust me, we still felt even more pressure going into Round 9 than into Round 1. We had done a great job so far, and it was hard to imagine that we could lose it now, so many points ahead.

"However, if you are so damn close to achieving your life time dream, you really don't want to fuck it up. Round 9 was executed well and we outscored Airspeed by two points, which gave us an 11-point advantage going into the final round.

Sitting in the plane for the last round, the feeling was a mixture of excitement, thrill and emotions, which are hard to describe. In this moment we knew that when we would break off, we were the new world champions. It was an amazing feeling, hard to understand and comprehend in that moment.

"Our final round was a good one too, and we knew it right then. We were tracking off with big smiles on our faces. We had done it, unbelievable. Flying under canopy, seeing a big crowd that had gathered in the landing zone, was looking promising.

"Once we landed the emotions started to overwhelm us. It's hard to explain how it feels and what you think. It is a waterfall of emotions and reflections, but all very pure and straight from the heart. Tears were flowing for all of us.

It was a moment when we were very proud of what we had achieved and accomplished. Our fans gave us massive hugs and were cheering. There was also great sportsmanship especially from Airspeed and all the other teams. A dream had come true...

Ready for Round 10 in Prostejov
"This time we were also really looking forward to the award ceremony, because we would hold the best trophy in the world, the Excalibur sword, for the first time. We had pictures at home of this special sword, but our names were not on it. Now it's time for us to become a piece of the Excalibur history too.

"It was the best ceremony ever for Hayabusa. Holding the sword, seeing all the names of the previous 4-way world champions was impressive. I feel very lucky that I can say that many of those names on the trophy are my friends and people that I have met during all those years in the sport.

We feel extremely proud to have our names on it, as well. What started as a dream, forming Hayabusa in October 2002, to becoming the new world champions, had been a very long and hard road, with a lot of fun and great experiences. I hope you all can experience the feeling of achieving your personal dreams. Go for it and enjoy the ride...
