Did You Know...

... that three DeLand Norgies were back in 4-way action?

2nd in Sweden - 1st in Norway: Echochamber
posted May 11th, 2016 - The Sun Path Products NSL News briefly mentioned the Nordic Indoor Championships 2016 with yesterday's update from Denmark. Pangaea had attended the indoor competition at VossVind after winning the DFU Cup.

The Nordics were a Scandinavian extension of the Norwegian national indoor championships, which were held in 2015 for the first time. The event was the second combined Scandinavian indoor competition, as teams from Finland and Sweden joined for their national championships earlier this year. The Sun Path Products reported on February 18th.

The Nordics brought one team from the fourth Scandinavian country to Norway, Denmark's potentially new national team in 4-way Open, Pangaea. Two teams from Sweden also traveled to Norway and attended their second indoor competition this spring, Echochamber and Team X.

Siste Firern with two DeLand Norgies
Echochamber and Pangaea stole the two AAA Class top spots from the Norwegian teams, while Team X ended on the bottom of the AAA Class field after a 1-point battle with home team Voss Avanti.

The internal Norwegian battle for the 3rd place was one of the most interesting parts of the competition. The Polar Blue lineup consisted of two members of the last Norwegian national team in 4-way Women, Polaris. Ellen Burchardt and Trude Sviggum won bronze medals for Norway at the Mondial Dubai 2012. Polaris then disbanded, and Norway did not have a team in this category in Prostejov 2014.

Derek Broughton and Ulrik Høgsberg completed the Polar Blue lineup, both former members of their national teams from Norway (2010) and Denmark (2012) in 4-way Open.

First female world meet medalist in 4-way Open: Lise Nansen with DeLand Norgies in 1999
The opponent in the race for the Nordics bronze medals were two former DeLand Norgies members (Lise Nansen, Torstein Valen), together with another Polaris member (Sissel Maria Finnseth) and Nicolai Nansen. This 4-way is also made up of two married couples.

Lise Nansen and Torstein Valen won three sets of 4-way bronze medals for Norway in 1999, 2001 and 2003. Lise Aune became the first female 4-way Open Class competitor in the history of the sport in 1999 who won a medal at a World Championship of Formation Skydiving. The DeLand Norgies finished with a 19.1 average in 3rd place. It was the same event where FAI/IPC ran a test event in 4-way Women where the UK team won with an 11.1 average.

However, the Polar Blue lineup was six points stronger at VossVind and took the 3rd place behind the teams from Sweden and Denmark.

VossVind Girls at the World Challenge 2016
Another DeLand Norgies member competed at the same event, and he had his own internal battle with one of his former team mates. Pal Kolbenstvedt (Point) was Lise Nansen's (Outside Center) piece partner in the front piece between 1999 and 2003, and he has been player coaching the Penguins for several years.

Both former Norgies have been competing annually with their lineups of younger 4-way competitors, the Penguins (Pal Kolbenstvedt) and the Swingers

(Lise Nansen), over the years. Pal Kolbenstvedt saved all his energy for this year's first showdown, while Lise Nansen had to commit to double duties at VossVind. The Penguins won easily this time.

The winner of the AA Class competition was a lineup of VossVind's 4-way junior project. Two VossVind junior teams had also competed at the World Challenge 2016, where the AA Class team finished in 5th place of 19 teams.
