Did You Know...

... that The FAI/IPC tie-breaker rules have been simplified?

Discussion after the World Cup 2013 in Banja Luka
posted May 19th, 2016 - The Sun Path Products NSL News has recently brought important rule changes to the attention of the SKYLEAGUE.COM audience. Part 1 reported that the cuts for semi-finals and finals at FAI/IPC events were removed. Part 2 explained that the special "side-body link-up" definition does not exist any longer. Part 3 was indoor specific and related to contact with wind tunnel walls and floors.

The last important rule change in 4-way and 8-way Formation Skydiving competition concludes the story of the tie-breaking rule, which began with the battle for gold medal in 4-way Women between Golden Knights and French Girls at the FAI World Cup 2013.

The outcome of the competition after a jump-off round and application of the old tie-breaking rules initiated a discussion that had changes for the 2014/2015 season as a result.

3.2.2.1 If two or more teams have equal scores the following order of procedures will be applied:
3.2.2.1.1 For entry into the semi-final and the final rounds:
i. the highest score in any completed round,
ii. the highest score starting with the last completed round and continuing in reverse order, round by round until the tie is broken,
iii. the fastest time (measured to hundredths of a second) to the last common scoring formation in the last completed round.
3.2.2.1.2 For determination of the final placings:
i. one tie break round, if possible (for the first three placings only). The tie break round will be the next drawn round of the competition,
ii. the fastest time (measured to hundredths of a second) to the last common scoring formation in the last completed round.
No jump-off or tie-breaker in Prostejov 2014
The rules for the 2014 and 2015 season were still too complicated and also required an adjustment when the FAI/IPC committee decided to remove the cuts for semi-finals and finals.

The simplification of the tie-breaking rules was achieved by completely dropping the search for the highest scores in a single round between the opponents, and finding the faster completion of the last formation in the competition instead.

The new rule was already in place for the determination of the final placing. The removal of cuts for semi-finals and finals was the perfect opportunity to simplify the rules for the "Objective of the Events" (3.2) at FAI World Meets and World Cups, indoor and outdoor. The FAI judges did not have to use the stop watch yet at FAI/IPC events in 2014 and 2015. However, the Mondial 2016 has the potential to generate jump-offs for medals and tie-breakers...
