Did You Know...

... that Norway had record breaking 4-way participation at the national championships?

Will be back: DeLand Norgies in 2015
posted Aug 16th, 2016 - Norway held the national championships at the beginning of August (2 - 6), as well, and the 19 teams in Voss joined forces for a new 4-way record participation since 2007.

15 teams has been the highest number in the past years, and even the inconsistent weather did not keep the teams from visiting Voss.

At the same time, it was also the first time since 2009 that the DeLand Norgies, world meet bronze medalists of 1999, 2001 and 2003, missed the national championships.

However, the DeLand Norgies fans don't have to worry, as this is not the end of the career of one of the most popular 4-way teams in history.

Outside Center Lise Nansen confirmed that her team will come back. The Norgies just could not coordinate their schedules this year, and they plan to be back next year: "We shall never surrender..."

Weather situation at the Norwegian Nationals 2016
The solid number of 11 A Class teams also seems to indicate that 4-way competition has an upswing in Norway.

The number of 19 teams at the outdoor competition is even higher than the participation at the indoor championship in April, where 11 Norwegian teams competed.

Former Norwegian national 4-way competitor Kjetil Nordin, who now competes for Pangaea, Denmark's national 4-way Open Class team, had placed 2nd with his new team at the indoor competition in April and came back again to his homeland for the outdoor championship.

He said that the event was hurt by bad weather:

"We had bad weather, but the very skilled meet director, Vibeke Valle, spotted holes in the clouds like a ninja..."

Kjetil Nordin confirmed that Norway's 4-way competition is in good shape, despite the absence of the DeLand Norgies:

"The trend is actually going in the right direction. If nothing else, the number of teams is very high compared to previous years."

Kjetil Nordin with his Stavanger 8-way team
He competed only in 8-way, for the third year in a row with the same team from Stavanger, a small club from a region of Norway "that is not known for a lot of blue skies".

The same team barely won bronze in 2014, then silver in 2015 and now followed up with the first gold medals. Three Stavanger members have been with the team for all three years, while seven came back from the 2015 championships.

Kjetil Nordin added that former Arcteryx member Derek Nordlund Broughton and Sondre Tommervold both won a record breaking number of five gold medals each:

"They competed in FS, VFS and Freefly disciplines."

Norway is sending only a 4-way VFS team to the Mondial 2016 next month, which is Derek Nordlund Broughton's Blue Pelican lineup (Dennis Barstad, Derek Nordlund Broughton, Andreas Hemli, Ulrik Hoegsberg, Sondre Tommervold).
