Did You Know...

... that Florida's ICL competitors celebrated farewell to the old iFLY Orlando tunnel?

First FSL Tunnel Kicker at iFLY Tampa
posted Feb 13th, 2017 - 4-way fans and competitors of the Florida Skydiving League came together most likely for the last time at iFLY Orlando on Thursday to post scores and videos for the 12+ leaderboard of the Indoor Cloud League.

The Sun Path Products NSL News reported the first Indoor Cloud League event at iFLY Tampa on 28 January 2017, and the new ICL team posted a complete set of scores and videos on the 14+ leaderboard.

It is not only the new wind tunnel in Tampa that attracts mostly the 4-way fans from the west coast of Florida, especially the Skydive City community, to the Indoor Cloud League events.

iFLY Orlando will soon offer a much more sophisticated environment with brand-new facilities, as well.

Last FSL Tunnel Kicker at iFLY Orlando
The first and oldest wind tunnel in the U.S.A. that has been serving 4-way teams and competitors since it was opened in 1998 is coming to the end of its operation.

The new iFLY Orlando tunnel is expected to open for the public and for any skydiving training in March, which will also be the end of the 1998 tunnel at the same time.

The Florida Skydiving League will offer Indoor Cloud League events at both locations in the future, in Tampa and in Orlando, and last week's FSL Tunnel Kicker may have produced the last scores and videos at the old location on International Drive.

The ICL participants last week were very well aware of the situation and celebrated the farewell flying sessions.

No other events are scheduled for the month of February, and the current numbers on the 12+ leaderboard will most likely be the final ones.

Beginning of the iFLY empire: Alan Metni with staff at SkyVenture Orlando in 2004
Bill Kitchen built the SkyVenture Orlando wind tunnel and opened it in 1998.

It attracted 4-way teams and competitors from all over the world to Orlando, and Arizona Airspeed created a professional and very successful indoor training camp environment when it became obvious that a wind tunnel would be a great training tool for skydivers and 4-way teams.

The National Skydiving League also organized tunnel camps in the early years of iFLY Orlando, while Arizona Airspeed held their camps in Orlando.

Alan Metni was an Airspeed member at that time, and the NSL and Airspeed tunnel camps contributed heavily to the SkyVenture Orlando success.

Eventually, Alan Metni saw the business opportunity and decided to purchase the Orlando operation from Bill Kitchen, which became the launching pad for the still growing iFLY empire.First FSL Tunnel Kicker in September 2011

FSL Tunnel Kicker coaching staff in September 2011
Teams from Florida have been using iFLY Orlando for indoor training ever since the wind tunnel was built in 1998.

The Florida Skydiving League began later to organize indoor training camps, the FSL Tunnel Kicker, which were mostly recruiting and networking opportunities.

The first FSL Tunnel Kicker with its original format was held in September 2011. Current Airspeed member Ari Perelman was in the coaching staff, together with Katie Woods, Robert Chromy, Rodney Cruce and Kurt Gaebel.

The FSL Tunnel Kickers have continued ever since and eventually created the Indoor Cloud League, which was launched in 2012.

iFLY Orlando (Florida Skydiving League) and iFLY Seattle (Northwest Skydiving League) began to challenge each other with monthly indoor duels, even though the flying chambers had different sizes.

Other wind tunnels joined the Indoor Cloud League competition, and the different flying chambers were finally separated from each other with their own leaderboards.

The new iFLY Orlando tunnel will continue to post scores on the 12+ leaderboard.
