Did You Know...

... that Adventure Flyers and Simba competed in new categories in DeLand?

First AA Class outdoor meet: Simba
posted Mar 22nd, 2017 - The last two NSL-TV videos of the Shamrock Showdown 2017 feature the Adventure Flyers from Paraguay and AA Class team Simba, with Naila Novaronti from Indonesia in the point slot.

Simba has been training in DeLand for a few years, as team members Robert Chromy, Trevor Cedar, Rodrigo Espinosa and videographer Luke Evans are working at the drop zone. Team sponsor Naila Novaronti visits from Indonesia on a regular basis and her team mates take time off whenever she is available.

Simba started to compete in the Rookie Class at the NSL Championship 2014, which turned out to be an indoor competition at iFLY Orlando when the weather did not support an outdoor meet. Pam Manos and Nick Utton were in the first Simba lineup, together with Naila Novaronti and Rodrigo Espinosa.

Simba trained here and there throughout the 2015 season and then created a competition schedule for 2016. Player coach Robert Chromy had prepared the team for the A Class dive pool, and Simba attended three meets of the Florida Skydiving League before finishing off the 2016 season in the A Class at the NSL Championship.

First 4-way competition: Adventure Flyers from Paraguay
Simba began to train the additional eight blocks of the AA Class this year and applied them for the first time at the World Tunnel League March meet in Tampa. The 15.1 indoor average won the Tampa meet, and Simba finished in 3rd place behind two Czech teams in the Hurricane Factory on the combined leaderboard.

Simba followed up with the team's first outdoor competition in the AA Class at the Shamrock Showdown, which included 15 of the 16 blocks in the dive pool.

The Adventure Flyers from Paraguay went even a big step further and skipped the three categories for teams who plan their progression step by step and category by category. They were in DeLand for a training camp with coach Solly Williams, and they added the competition to the agenda at the end of the camp.

It was the very first competition for the team, and Belen Varela, Leonardo Calvete, Daniel Flecha and Marcelo Kegler still decided to take on the complete dive pool right away and compete in the AAA Class.

Adventure Flyers: On the way to Australia 2018...?
It was impressive to watch how well the brand-new competitors mastered the AAA Class dive pool. The draw included a slot switcher for the Adventure Flyers in Round 2, while creative engineering allowed all teams to avoid the memory in Rounds 1 and 3.

No team from Paraguay has ever competed at an FAI World Championship of Formation Skydiving since 1985, and the Adventure Flyers could be the first one by traveling to Australia next year. The team and coach Solly Williams are fully aware of the event and the opportunity, and the discussion of plans has begun.

The participation of the Adventure Flyers in the AAA Class with the challenging dive pool and 10-round draw was almost rewarded with cash in the Skins Game. The first $200 of Skydive DeLand's $2,000 jackpot were on stake in Round 6, and the team from Paraguay ended up only a fraction of a scoring point (24.75 - 24.45) after handicap behind Elixir. The next 9-pointer in Round 8 was also close to the $200 skin.
