... that there was live 4-way judging at the Belgian Indoor Nationals 2018?

NMP PCH HayaBusa at the Belgian Indoor Nationals 2018
posted Dec 21st, 2018 - The Belgian Indoor Nationals have turned into a high-profile international competition, and even the reigning FAI/IPC indoor world champions competed at the event this year. NMP PCH HayaBusa did not have a serious challenger at their national indoor championships that they did not attend last year. However, they won this year's national indoor title with a 33.7 average, which is the second highest team average in team history, and only one other team, Weembi Mix, has ever scored higher.

Teams from eight different countries made the trip to Charleroi in Belgium, where Airspace hosted the event in a 14-foot flying chamber. Airspace will also be the host of the FAI Indoor World Cup 2020.

HayaBusa's Inside Center David Grauwels said that the competition draw was not too complicated, and it gave his team a nice result at the end of another successful year.

He said that HayaBusa is now eager to show up strongly again next year. The FAI Indoor World Championship 2019 is going to be the main highlight and goal for the year. HayaBusa will warm up for the main event at the Wind Games and the World Challenge before facing off again with the FAI Indoor World Cup champions of Weembi Mix. Some additional indoor training in the 17-foot Fly-In chamber in Liege, Belgium, together with Arizona Airspeed, is scheduled before the showdown with Weembi Mix in Lille.NMP PCH HayaBusa at the Belgian Indoor Nationals 2018

Weembi Mix member Julien Degen competed with the next Weembi Legion lineup in Belgium and could observe the HayaBusa performance at the Belgian Indoor Nationals. He had recently applied live judging at his own Weembinamic 2018 event and also witnessed the next live judging application at Airspace.

Judges Trude Sviggum, Zeljko Tanaskovic, Pete Allum and Steve Hamilton were in charge of the 4-way scores, and David Grauwels was impressed with the results. He said that two judges were watching the jump live, while he could follow the video feed with a delay of less than one second: "It was fun to come out of the tunnel after 36 seconds and watch your unofficial score on the screen."

Judge Pete Allum said that Michelle Cnops and HÃ¥vard Flat of the Airspace host put a lot of effort into creating an international field of teams to showcase the live judging project.

Two of the judges were watching the live action in the flying chamber from an elevated position in a similar way as Jeremie Rollett had done at the Weembinamic 2018. The third judge was watching the same performance on a recorded video.

Pete Allum explained that one of the judges was watching the teams at the entrance door to the flying chamber and initiated the clock for the 35-second working time.

The other judges had a Wii controller unit to denote scoring points, which were seen by all spectators on the live video. Any infringements were called after the end of the flight, and the according point deductions were added to the score sheet.

A review was automatically called if there was a discrepancy of more than two points between the judges for the final score. All judges then rushed to the screen and watched the video at either full or reduced speed to come to an agreement for the score in question. Pete Allum said that this occurred approx. twice per round and mostly in the AA category.

Teams would then see their score as they left the flying chamber, and the next team would not enter before the score of the previous team was posted, if there was a review. He said that no team had to wait more than two minutes in such a case, and the 4-way competition was finished on time.
