Did You Know...

... that Mathieu Bernier was back in 4-way action last weekend?

New French 8-way team in training

posted Jul 15th, 2019 - The Coupe de France competition last weekend in Lyon was the reason why the NSL News recently turned from the extensive coverage of the Airspeed and HayaBusa lineup changes to the situation of the French national 4-way teams.

Two updates last weekend included overviews of the French team development in 4-way Open and 4-way Women.

Both new lineups of the current national 4-way teams posted their first scores last weekend at the Coupe de France competition, and there was no 8-way event in Lyon. The two 4-way lineups together form the French national 8-way team, which has the main priority with training and competition efforts in 2019 and 2020.

Both 4-way teams have completed between 40 and 50 training jumps this year, while the 8-way lineup is far ahead of these numbers with training.

However, national coach Mathieu Bernier still needs the competition experiences for his new 4-way teams, and he had the opportunity to evaluate the current performance level after the ten rounds in Lyon.

Standard French 4-way exit constellation last weekend
In fact, Mathieu Bernier himself was in full competition action, as well. Christine Malnis was not available on the competition weekend, and he filled the inside center slot with his blue jumpsuit of the former Weembi High Rollers lineup.

The outside center in the French engineering system is actually exiting from the inside of the jump plane. The history of French Formation Skydiving competition is tightly connected to the Pilatus Porter jump plane with a right-hand door, and most French 4-way teams modified the same slot constellation when exits from left-hand doors became the dominating factor at international Formation Skydiving competition.

The French point slot is usually outside of the plane facing the inside or line of flight and flies the front piece together with the center person inside the plane. The standard tail exit is a diving position, and the piece partner is in the outside center position of the left-hand exit door.

This brings Clementine Le Bohec (Point) and Christine Malnis (Inside Center) together in the front piece, with Mathier Bernier instead last weekend. Gaelle Giesen (Tail) and Sophia Pecout (Outside Center) are connecting in the rear piece.

Meeker (E) 4-way exit constellation at the FAI World Meet 2018
Exits and first pages were completely new for the current 4-way Women lineup and the new piece partners this year. Christine Malnis and Sophia Pecout have been in the point and tail slots ever since they were selected for the French 4-way Women team in 2013. They won FAI gold (2014, 2018) and silver (2016) France in these slots.

The new exit positions could not be much more different compared to their exit experiences in the past six years, and they have new piece partners, too. Clementine Le Bohec is also in a new exit slot, after four years in the center outside exit position and with rear piece partner Sophia Pecout. She is now in the point slot, which is at least similar to her previous exits.

It is no surprise that exits and first pages were the biggest challenges for AĆ©rodyne Hauts de France last weekend, including videographer Julie Fournier, especially with little 4-way training from jump planes. However, the new 4-way Women team managed once again to fend off Aerodyne Cypres, the new 4-way Open Class team, this time by five points.

Mathieu Bernier knows that both 4-way teams could not be ready for world class scores at this point in time. He enjoys seeing both teams close and pushing each other, and he is still optimistic that his plan will work out after 250 training jumps in 4-way...
