Did You Know...

... that Niklas Hemlin will try to defend his 27.9 record average at the USPA Nationals?

The Hemlin family
posted Sep 5th, 2019 - A new NSL Profile has been published, and it features Arizona Airspeed's Niklas Hemlin.

The overview of Niklas Hemlin's skydiving career has been overdue for a while for many reasons. He has become one of the most experienced and most successful 4-way and 8-way competitors in the world. He has been a professional and full-time skydiver for many years and has dedicated his whole life to the sport and to his family with four children. He is jumping, coaching, organizing, and he is always open for sharing his experiences and for a joke.

Niklas Hemlin was also a member of the legendary Airspeed lineup that won the FAI gold medals in Dubai 2012 with the highest outdoor meet average in the history of Formation Skydiving competition. The 27.9 is still standing as the historic mark, even though NMP PCH HayaBusa tied the highest meet average in Australia 2018.

It is remarkable that both results were posted at world meets, the most relevant Formation Skydiving events in the world. It actually shows that the best teams and competitors perform on their peak level when they are under pressure at a competition. Arizona Airspeed won by one single point in 2012 (279 - 278) and NMP PCH HayaBusa won by two points in 2018 (279 - 277).

27.9 average in Dubai 2012: Arizona Airspeed
Niklas Hemlin is the only current Airspeed member of the 2012 lineup (Josh Hall, Thomas Hughes, Mark Kirkby, Bill Schmitz on camera), and he witnessed with last year's lineup (Mikhail Markine, Thiago Gomes, Ari Perelman, David French on camera) how NMP PCH HayaBusa tied the 27.9 average in Australia.

Both teams pushed each other to the historic 27.9 averages at both events. Three members of HayaBusa's 2012 lineup (Dennis Praet, David and Andy Grauwels) also posted the 27.9 average last year, together with new tail Jeroen Nollet and Luc van Britsom on camera.

The 27.9 average of 2012 may even have the higher value, due to the competition draw. The ten rounds in Australia included a sequence of only random formations in Round 6, where NMP PCH HayaBusa posted a new world record for a single round with the 62-pointer. Arizona Airspeed boosted their won average with 60 points in the same round.

The fastest round in Dubai 2012 was a block with three random formations (16-F-P-Q) where both teams posted 40-pointers.

27.9 average in Australia 2018: NMP PCH HayaBusa
Niklas Hemlin's NSL Profile comes with an interesting timing, as the next showdown between Arizona Airspeed and NMP PCH HayaBusa is just around the corner at the upcoming USPA Nationals. Niklas Hemlin will meet the same three HayaBusa members of 2012 at Skydive Paraclete XP next week.

The Belgian 4-way world champions are coming with the same lineup that posted the 27.9 average last year, while Niklas Hemlin has Matt Davidson in the point slot for Ari Perelman. Both teams will be very well prepared for the new showdown, and they could easily push each other to a new record level. They were already going on a 28+ pace in Australia. Only the point deductions, HayaBusa 11 - Airspeed 8, kept them from posting new record averages.

Niklas Hemlin's world champion team mates of 2012 will be present in Raeford next week, as well, and they may witness a new record number. Mark Kirkby is player-coaching his Arizona Alpha team, and he is in the very strong Airspeed 8-way lineup. Josh Hall is player-coaching Elsinore Elevate, and Thomas Hughes will probably visit too. Roy Janssen is the only current 27.9 world record owner who will not observe or be actively involved in the new challenge of the old record...
