... that former HayaBusa member Luc Verstrepen prepares a new Qatar 4-way generation?

NMP PCH HayaBusa with Sven Ibens at the FAI World Meet 2006
posted Nov 11th, 2019 - The NSL News has mentioned Luc Verstrepen whenever the story related to the German 4-way team Oceanside AtomiX, the country's new 4-way champion and national team. He has been coaching AtomiX since the team was formed six years ago, and the partnership recently showed the best possible result with the 1st place at the national championships.

Luc Verstrepen is currently visiting Skydive City in Zephyrhills, Florida, host of the Shamrock Showdown 2020, where he is coaching another 4-way project. The NSL News used the opportunity to meet with him for a new NSL Live Talk conversation.

His work project at Skydive City is the next step that Qatar's Formation Skydiving delegation has put in place to create a healthy foundation for the national teams in 4-way, the Qatar Tigers, and in 8-way, the Qatar Falcons. Tigers coach Gary Smith and Falcons coach Jeremie Rollett don't have much of a choice so far when they need an alternate or new team members. Qatar's Formation Skydiving management realized the difficulties that the limited personnel choices could cause, and they reacted.

They selected a new generation of Qatar skydivers, who began with AFF training in April this year. Luc Verstrepen said that he and his French coaching colleague Marin Ferre were hired to develop the 4-way skills of the new group as soon as they were ready for Formation Skydiving training.

It took Luc Verstrepen and Marin Ferre no longer than five months to get the three new 4-way teams ready for competition, and they posted their first scoring numbers in the A Class competition of the ESL Championship on Luc Verstrepen's home turf in Spa, Belgium.

The three teams (Lions - Falcons - Cheetas) took the first three places, even though they could not win the ESL Championship Spirit, due to their home location outside of Europe. However, the consistent training with the same coaches resulted in an almost completely identical performance level of all three teams. Lions, Falcons and Cheetas were separated by two points from each other on the top of the A Class leaderboard.

Luc Verstrepen said that his goal is to get all team members to a level where they would be able to step in whenever the national 4-way and 8-way teams need new members.

The three new teams are done with their A Class training by now, and they are in the process of getting familiar with the additional eight blocks of the AA Class. Luc Verstrepen said that they will soon begin with AAA Class training and preparations for the Shamrock Showdown 2020 where the complete Qatar delegation will compete in 4-way and 8-way.

Luc Verstrepen with Oceanside AtomiX at the German Nationals 2019
Luc Verstrepen is a former NMP PCH HayaBusa member. He was the inside center for the lineup who won the first FAI medals for Belgium with the 3rd place at the FAI World Meet 2008. David Grauwels was outside center at that time, and his brother Andy Grauwels was his piece partner in the point slot. Roy Janssen was the HayaBusa tail.

Luc Verstrepen joined HayaBusa when Sven Ibens could not commit to the big plans of joining the military forces and becoming full-time competitors and 4-way world champions. He trained and competed with NMP PCH HayaBusa for two years and left the team after winning the FAI bronze medals in 2008. He said that he wanted to make room for a younger team member.

The HayaBusa plans obviously worked out perfectly, and Luc Verstrepen said that his heart is still beating for his former team mates. He may be able to meet them soon, as HayaBusa has scheduled a training camp at Skydive City at the end of November, together with the Qatar Tigers and coach Gary Smith.

His work with the German team Oceanside AtomiX continues with new team member Paul Hofstee who he knows very well. He is confident that the new lineup will be able to set new standards in Germany, while he is preparing the new Qatar 4-way competitors for future challenges...
