Did You Know...

... that the VAF Warriors had to work for their next Danish 4-way indoor title?

Record participation at the Danish Indoor Nationals 2019 in Berlin
posted Nov 17th, 2019 - Denmark added national indoor championships to the country's meet schedule in 2010, and the event has been held every year in October/November ever since. This year, the hosting wind tunnel was the Hurricane Factory in Berlin, Germany, as Denmark does not have an adequate indoor flying facility.

However, the Danish Indoor Nationals 2019 in Berlin turned out to generate the highest number of teams in Denmark's 4-way history - indoor or outdoor. The total number of 17 teams is a new record, with nine teams on the AAA Class leaderboard and eight in the A Class.

JustinTime were the defending indoor champions. They had won in October 2018 when the VAF Warriors did not try to defend their indoor title that they had won in 2014, 2015 and 2017. The VAF Warriors were the Danish national 4-way team since 2013 and represented Denmark at the FAI World Meet 2014. They had also won the national championship in 2015, even though Pangaea eventually competed for Denmark at the FAI World Meet 2016.

The VAF Warriors were still back the same year and attended the FAI Indoor World Cup 2016 as their last event, as the NSL News reported on 10 January 2017. It was not really the end of the team career though, as they were back a year later at the Danish Indoor Nationals 2017. Pangaea were once again the main opponent and once again could not stop the VAF Warriors from winning their next indoor title.

It seemed like the VAF Warriors were really done after winning in 2017, as they were not back to defend their title last year at Flyspot in Poland. Vibeke and Torben Birk Tiedemann, Martin Halfer and Peter Stræde became the new Danish 4-way indoor champions with JustinTime.

However, the complete and original VAF Warriors lineup (Anne Mine Petersen, John Behrendt Petersen, Henning Skov, Martin Soeby Mikkelsen) just sat out for a year and were back this month for more indoor competition.

This time, they had a different challenger, even though Pangaea did not sign up for the event. Three Pangaea members were back with different teams, Hans Oksen with Sky4all, Peter Stræde with VeloPanAir and Ali Shahrohktash with Hybris after a long injury break. Pick-up team Aetas Volat filled in as a strong challenger for the VAF Warriors at their reunion comeback, and it turned out to be a 7-point battle.

Jesper Rasmussen brought in the most 4-way competition experience as a former DaneZ member who competed for Denmark as the national 4-way team at the world meets in 2004 and 2006, and on camera in 2012. His Aetas Volat team mate Flemming Borup Andersen trained and competed with Voluntas, Denmark's national team after the DaneZ in 2010 and 2012. Ulrik Høgsberg was with one of the Danish 4-way project teams, Sequence, at the same time period and before he turned to 4-way VFS competition. He had also trained and competed with Voluntas and Flemming Borup Andersen in 2011.

Vibeke Birk Tideman, Flemming Borup Andersen and Ulrik Høgsberg with Sequence
Vibeke Birk Tideman completed the Aetas Volat lineup who finished with the highest average of a team in 2nd place at any Danish 4-way competition, and the VAF Warriors needed their second highest indoor meet average to fend off the new challengers.

Vibeke Birk Tideman was in the same Sequence lineup, together with her husband Torben Birk Tideman and Ulrik Hogsberg, when DaneZ and Volutas dominated the Danish 4-way leaderboards. Vibeke and Torben Birk Tideman then won the national indoor championship last year, together with former Pangaea member Peter Stræde and Martin Halfer. Only Vibeke Birk Tideman was in the new Aetas Volat lineup, and she finished with her first 20+ average.

The 1st place in the A Class came much easier to SubSonic compared to the AAA Class battle. The same lineup (Joshua Pierce, William Lundh, Lars Mølvad, Simon Markussen) plans to move up into the AAA Class in 2020. Hey Hallå have also indoor and outdoor plans for next year and will probably become the next top contender for the A Class title.

Hey Hallå member Kirsten Haukrogh Jürgensen just got her skydiving license this year in February and was approved for Formation Skydiving at the end of April. Hey Hallå had won the bronze medals at the Danish Outdoor Nationals this year.
