Did You Know...

... that the Weembinamic format created an upset at the 2019 edition?

Awards at the Weembinamic 2019
posted Jan 1st, 2020 - Weembi Lille, host of the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019, organized once again the annual Weembinamic at the end of November. The Weembinamic has its unique special scoring system that pitches two teams against each other after three qualification rounds, while still maintaining a traditional 10-round leaderboard.

This year, there was actually a heavy upset in the knock-out rounds that changed the final outcome and the positions on the 4-way podium. The winner on the traditional 10-round leaderboard, Monaco Aérokart AK’démie, had the Weembi Fighters as their opponents in the semifinals of Round 7 and Round 8. Weembi Fighters are a new young French B-Team, with Julien Degen as the player-coach.

The 4-way juniors, FAI indoor silver medalists in April this year, had a devastating Round 7 with nine point deductions. They recovered and won Round 8, but it wasn't enough to defeat the opponent, who had Julien Degen in the lineup, one of the most experienced 4-way and 8-way competitors in the world.

Monaco Aérokart AK’démie did not make the finals and ended up in 3rd place of the Weembinamic. The Weembi Fighters were in an interesting situation, as they were facing Weembi Unicorns in the finals (Rounds 9 - 10). Julien Degen had to compete with both teams, and his Weembi Fighters lost after four penalties in Round 9. However, Julien Degen ended up on the podium with both teams. It was the first time that the winner after Round 10 on the traditional leaderboard was not the Weembinamic winner.

Back in action: Jessica Thebault at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019
Monaco Aérokart AK’démie outscored Espoir Weembi Lille in the finals (44 - 39) without much trouble. This duel was an internal French showdown between the French national indoor teams in 4-way Junior (Monaco Aérokart AK’démie) and 4-way Women (Espoir Weembi Lille).

The 4-way juniors also won the 10-round meet over the French female indoor team, who have Jessica Thebault back in the lineup. She was injured at the beginning of last year and could not compete at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019, where Clementine Le Bohec filled in for the Nephtys. Clementine Le Bohec competed once again for Weembi Unicorns. She was the only member of the French national outdoor team in 4-way Women who competed in 4-way at the Weembinamic. Her 4-way and 8-way outdoor team mates Sophia Pecout and Christine Malnis competed only with the Weembi Girls in 8-way.

Monaco Aérokart AK’démie were still competing in the 4-way Junior category at the FAI Indoor World Meet when the Weembi Nephtys won the 4-way Women gold medals for France. The French 4-way juniors had finished in 2nd place behind the Czech HF Cubs at the same event. It was still not a surprise that Monaco Aérokart AK’démie finished ahead of the female 4-way seniors. They had already outscored Weembi Nephtys at the French Indoor Nationals 2019.

4-way Junior awards at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019
Monaco Aérokart AK’démie and HF Cubs will not have their own re-match in 4-way Junior this year. The NSL News reported earlier that the HF Cubs have moved up into the AAA Class competition, even though two team members are still eligible for FAI/IPC's 4-way Junior category.

However, both teams will probably compete again at the same event, the FAI Indoor World Cup 2020 in Belgium, HF Cubs in 4-way Women, Monaco Aérokart AK’démie in 4-way Junior, and both teams may win new medals. The French team would turn 4-way Junior silver into gold, the Czech team could be a medal contender in 4-way Women.

Both teams started with AAA Class training and competition before they won their last FAI junior medals in April 2019 at Weembi Lille, the French team in January 2018, the Czech team at the end of the same year. They still have only competed with each other in the 4-way Junior category at the FAI/IPC events. It seems to be only a matter of time when they will post their scores on the same AAA Class leaderboard.

It will probably be another great competition, as both teams seem to be on a very similar scoring and performance level at this point in time...
