Did You Know...

... that Veloce QRF outscored Qatar Falcons and Weembi Girls for the first time?

High-profile world-class pickup team: Weembi Ultim8
posted Jan 2nd, 2020 - Contrary to the 4-way competition at the Weembinamic 2019 the knock-out format did not change anything in the rankings on the traditional 8-way leaderboard. In fact, the ranking orders of the eleven 8-way teams were exactly identical after qualification rounds, quarterfinals, semifinals and finals at Weembi Lille.

Host Julien Degen recruited the strongest 8-way team to defend the home turf, even though Weembi Ulima8 competed as a guest team, and Veloce QRF was on the top spot on the podium. He had a highly experienced lineup of three player-coaches with other 8-way teams at the event, and five well-trained 4-way and 8-way players.

Julien Degen, Brian Krause and Martial Ferre competed with other 8-way teams, as well, and Clementine Le Bohec is a member of the current French national 8-way team, as Thomas Perrin Gachadoat was for several years in the past. Claire-Victoire de Fleurian, Roy Janssen and Livio Piccolo are world-class 4-way competitors who just had to follow the lead of the 8-way experts in their lineup. The 8-way pickup team finished with a 26.7 average, which was far ahead of the actual winner, Veloce QRF.

Veloce QRF lineup at the Weembinamic 2019
Martial Ferre had only three members of his his signature lineup available for the Weembinamic 2019, Henning Stumpp, Uwe Soppa and himself. However, the five world-class substitutes made the event even more exciting for the two German visitors, and the team's new 25.1 record average was no surprise. It was still not enough to get close to Weembi Ultim8. However, the Quick Reaction Force (QRF) at Weembi Lille did not only finish with the team's highest scoring numbers. Player-coach Martial Ferre and his high-profile team mates also helped Henning Stumpp and Uwe Soppa to their first victory over Qatar Falcons and Weembi Girls.

The three teams have meet each other at several indoor meets before, and Veloce QRF always finished behind Qatar's national teams and the all-female and almost all-French 8-way team, with Chiara Brunetti from Italy once again in the lineup.

The Qatar Falcons are still behind their scoring and performance level that they were on before last year's change in the lineup. However, the team's focus is on outdoor competition in 2020, and they will be back at Skydive City jumping from planes in January.

The reigning FAI 8-way bronze medalists of Australia 2018 are facing a very challenging situation this year in Tanay, where the Russian home team, Airspeed XP8 and the new French national 8-way team will be the top contenders for the three sets of FAI 8-way medals. The Qatar Falcons will meet their opponents at the Shamrock Showdown in March for a preview of the outdoor world meet.

8-way awards at the Weembinamic 2019
Julien Degen used a live-judging format for his Weembinamic 2019, similar to the judging at the Belgian Indoor Nationals 2019. The wind tunnel in Charleroi, Belgium, hosted the event in December, and the FAI Indoor World Cup 2020 will take place there, as well.

The feedback after the Belgian Indoor Nationals was not very convincing, and the world cup will be conducted according to the traditional FAI/IPC judging rules.

Julien Degen was also experimenting with the starting point for the working time at the Weembinamic to support the live-judging format. The demo video is showing some of the details and provided instructions for the entry into the flying chamber.

Julien Degen said that he and his staff noticed that the scoring average of the teams was roughly two points lower than usual at the Weembinamic. He thinks that is was caused mainly due to the new rules for the entry into the flying chamber and the start of the working time. He plans to change the entry rules for next year's event to avoid the scoring difference.
