Did You Know...

... that the Gen Z juniors won the SkyVenture New Hampshire Rookie Class competition?

posted Feb 2nd, 2020 - It is difficult for any other event to catch a lot of attention if any of the most popular international competitions in the world is taking place at about the same time.

The annual SkyVenture New Hampshire Indoor Championship was taking place just before the Wind Games and the event's related previews. There was barely enough time to complete the posting of scores and videos from New England in the United States until the attention shifted to Empuriabrava in Spain.

Both events don't really interfere with each other. Ben Liston at SkyVenture New Hampshire attracts mostly local and regional 4-way teams and competitors to his competition, which is still the biggest 4-way indoor event in the United States. However, the NSL News mentioned earlier that at least the new Airspeed members, Christopher Kuhlmann and Joey Marshall, would not be able to travel to SkyVenture New Hampshire this year.

Niklas Hemlin has also been visiting SkyVenture New Hampshire for the same competition in the past. Last time, he was first player-coaching Nik's Angels at the 2018 event and then followed up at the Wind Games. The logistics of the same two meets were a little bit easier in 2018, as almost two weeks separated them at that time.

The SkyVenture New Hampshire competition was as appealing as every year, and a total of 36 teams kept the host and Ben Liston busy on the one meet day. As usual, the event organizer himself competed with a new variation of his Mass Defiance team mates. Ben Liston and Jim Rees had Brian Boyle and Doug Hendrix in their Total Compliance 2.0 lineup this time.

Ben Liston was organizing the whole event while completing his ten rounds, and team mate Jim Rees was in the judging room most of the day.

The NSL News mentioned in the preview on January 16th that a new 4-way junior lineup would attend the competition for their first 4-way and meet experiences. It turned out that the Rookie Class competition would be the only category where two teams were tied after ten rounds, and the Gen Z juniors had to go into an extra round for the tie-breaker at their first competition.

It became even better when they won the extra round by four points and won the Rookie Class competition. Both teams actually completed the same number of points in Round 11, and the 4-way juniors won with a clean score sheet.

Rookie Class winner after tie-breaker round: Gen Z
Three of the four juniors also completed a second set of ten rounds at the same event. The parents (Roger Cunha, Veera and Jack Ronalter) competed with their families in the A Class, the Cunhas with the BraXZilians, the Ronalters with Fam Jam.

They staid close to each other all day long for logistical reasons, and they also ended up right next to each other on the A Class leaderboard. Only the youngest Gen Z member, 10-year old Marcus Cunha, did not add ten more rounds to his agenda, while the parents still did not have enough and competed even more with other additional teams.

Father Jack Ronalter said that "it was so nice to see the kids work hard to make points". Unfortunately, it is not easy for the juniors to train together with a 3-hour driving distance. He said that the parents would like to see them fly together regularly. The Cunhas and the Ronalters will give it some more thought and see what could be done.

Jack Ronalter said that the kids were already asking about the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship. How could you resist...?
