... that Arizona Airspeed visits the World Challenge for the 10th time?

Arizona Airspeed at the World Challenge 2007
posted Feb 21st, 2020 - The World Challenge at Twinwoods Adventure in Bedford, still the biggest 4-way competition in the world, will be held for the 15th time this April. The registration for the event is in full swing, and the NSL News presents the first edition of the event's power rankings. The NSL News has covered the World Challenge live from Bedford since 2007, and the travel plans for this year's event are almost complete.

The first overview of the field of currently registered teams is showing the team in the top spot that will celebrate the 10th trip to Bedford, Arizona Airspeed. The Odyssey lineup (Eliana Rodriguez, Craig Girard, Andy Delk, Mark Kirkby) won the World Challenge four consecutive times between 2006 and 2009 before the French world champion lineup of 2010 stopped the series.

Then NMP PCH Hayabusa took over in 2011 and has won every year ever since, nine consecutive times. Airspeed tried to get back to the top one more time in 2012 and then took a long break, even after winning the FAI outdoor gold medals in Dubai later the same year.

The World Challenge took place without an Airspeed lineup competing in Bedford between 2013 and 2017, before the new 2017/2018 lineup (Niklas Hemlin, Thiago Gomes, Mikhail Markine, Ari Perelman) bought tickets to Great Britain for a comeback and a 3rd place behind NMP PCH HayaBusa and Weembi High Rollers in 2018. The same lineup was back last year and finished 2nd.

The 10th Airspeed visit in Bedford is bringing the new lineup to the World Challenge, who had a very impressive start at the Wind Games in January this year, where they finished closer to the indoor and outdoor world champions from Belgium than expected.

Airspeed will not get a re-match opportunity with HayaBusa this April, as the Belgians skip any other upcoming indoor events this year and focus on outdoor training and competition in the last year with the current lineup. It is the first time in the history of the World Challenge that NMP PCH HayaBusa will not be in Bedford.

Arizona Airspeed's new lineup have the opportunity to take back the top position of the traditional event, and they are now waiting for strong AAA Class opponents to sign up.

Weembi Unicorns are set in 2nd place so far, together with NFTO, who will try to switch the finishing position at the Wind Games with the Unicorns at the last test before the FAI Indoor World Cup 2020.

10-round 2-day competition in Bedford
FAI/IPC have recently scheduled their own indoor events close to the World Challenge, which will probably take a few teams out of the World Challenge equation who have only enough time and resources for one event within such a short time period.

The indoor part of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale (FAI) is still relatively new to the sport and still presents it under "Parachuting" to the public, while the indoor world cup is officially the "4th FAI World Cup of Indoor Skydiving". Neither "Parachuting" nor "Skydiving" are taking place at wind tunnel competitions, at least not according to the athletes' terminology.

The timing with other events as the World Challenge is apparently not well coordinated yet. However, this year, the FAI event can be completed by teams within four days, and the 4-way competition at the World Challenge has always required only two days for the actual competition.

The travel distance between Bedford and Charleroi is also reasonable, which could connect the two events for teams who would like to attend both of them. The World Challenge would offer the warm-up rounds for the next ten rounds a week later...
