Did You Know...

... that the CISM World Championship 2020 has been canceled?

FAI outdoor world champions in Australia 2018
posted Apr 5th, 2020 - The NSL News reported on 26 October 2019 that NMP PCH HayaBusa had once again unified the three 4-way world titles. The story was posted after the Belgians had won their 13th consecutive CISM title at the annual military world championship with a 35.5 average in China.

NMP PCH HayaBusa have also been the FAI outdoor world champion since 2014 and won their last gold medals in Australia 2018. Then they defended their indoor world championship title successfully at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019.

As all HayaBusa members are soldiers, fully sponsored by the Belgian military services, the CISM World Championship is actually the most important event for the team. They plan their training and competition agenda around the CISM World Championship and bring home the gold medals annually to justify their position and the ongoing support.

The NSL News also explained earlier how new member Michele Silvi was attending his military boot camp while NMP PCH HayaBusa was training at Skydive City. He had to join the Belgian military to be able to train and compete for HayaBusa when David Grauwels would step back after the FAI World Meet 2020.

This year's CISM World Championship was scheduled for June in Austria, and the event was now canceled with an official announcement by the CISM General Secretariat in Brussels, Belgium:

"BRUSSELS (BEL) - Due to the international situation of force majeure regarding the transmission and contamination of coronavirus (Covid-19), CISM is very sorry to inform that the Austrian Delegation to CISM decided to cancel the 44th CISM World Military Parachuting Championship, to be held in Guessing, Austria, from June 16th to 25th.

As the Austrian Delegation didn't find any other date to postpone the event in 2020, the next WMC Parachuting will take place in November 2021 in Doha, Qatar. The Austrian delegation is already planning to host 45th WMPC in June 2022 in Guessing. Further information and new invitation file will be published at www.cism-austria.at and www.milsport.one/sports/parachuting. Please accept our deepest wishes of prompt recover to all impacted countries and population aiming the sooner reestablishment of the regular world status quo."

It is an interesting coincidence that last year's CISM World Championship took place in Wuhan, China, which is commonly defined as the place of origin of the corona virus.

The cancellation of the CISM World Championship has an additional impact on NMP PCH HayaBusa's plans for the 2020 season. The Belgian world champions announced last year that original member David Grauwels steps back after the world meet this year. Michele Silvi will replace him in the active lineup, and David Grauwels moves from inside center to the camera slot.

The team was hoping that David Grauwels would retire with two new world championship titles, the first one after the CISM World Championship in June, followed by the FAI outdoor title in August.

FAI's indoor world meet will take place in 2021, when Michele Silvi will have his first opportunity to become a 4-way world champion next year, first at the FAI indoor and then at the CISM world meet. The current HayaBusa lineup was still planning to win the indoor world cup with David Grauwels, which was scheduled for this month in Charleroi and has been canceled in the meantime.

This year's outdoor world meet in Tanay is obviously in jeopardy, as well, and the FAI plans to announce the final decision at the end of May. Time will tell whether David Grauwels will have the opportunity to defend the outdoor title in Russia. So far, he will be leaving the active lineup as a reigning FAI indoor and CISM world champion...
