Did You Know...

... that AA Class indoor and outdoor rankings of 2019 are totally different?

AA Class gold and silver at the FAI Indoor World Meet: HF Cubs and Aerokart Ak'demie
posted Apr 16th, 2020 - The NSL News had covered the AAA Class indoor and outdoor world rankings of 2019 with the stories on January 22nd (outdoor) and January 25th (indoor). The outdoor rankings of the AA Class teams followed on February 27th, just before the corona virus crisis began to show its impact on Formation Skydiving competition.

There was no urgency to follow up quickly and compare the AA Class outdoor with the indoor rankings, not only because of the growing pandemic and other more pressing topics. The outdoor and indoor rankings of the AA Class teams have almost nothing in common, except for the dive pool and rules.

There is not even one single AA Class team that made the Top 10 on both leaderboards. Platinum XP, the world leader of the outdoor rankings find themselves in 22nd place on the indoor leaderboard. Only one of the Top 10 teams of the indoor rankings, KetchUp ADV from Italy, has outdoor scores in the SKYLEAGUE.COM records for the 2019 season, as well. Platinum XP in 22nd place is the second team with indoor and outdoor scores both, followed by Paranodon Futura from Germany in 23rd place.

Comparing the indoor with the outdoor rankings in this category indicates more clearly how the events in their very different environments are drifting apart from each other.

There are also other reasons though for the significant difference between the indoor and outdoor rankings. The most important one is the fact that the AA Class rankings include the 4-way junior teams, who apply the same dive pool and the same rules for their indoor competitions.

Four of the Top 10 teams in the AA Class are 4-way juniors, including the world leaders, HF Cubs from the Czech Republic and Aerokart Ak'demie from France, gold and silver medalists at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019. The bronze medalists from Russia are tied in 7th place of the world rankings, right behind the HF Flying Rebels who are the new Czech national team in 4-way Junior.

The Top 10 positions of last year's indoor rankings are also reflecting a situation that changed already before the calendar year was over.

All of the teams in the five top spots moved up into the AAA Class world, while they still posted AA Class scores at some point in time last year. HF Cubs and Aerokart Ak'demie both have been competing at AAA Class meets several times last year and before the corona virus crisis brought Formation Skydiving competition to a halt.

Despite competing in the AAA Class, Aerokart Ak'demie was still planning to compete in 4-way Junior at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2020, which was eventually canceled. The HF Cubs were planning to compete in 4-way Women.

KetchUP ADV's 23.5 average for the 1st place was the team's last result in the AA Class at the World Challenge 2019. The Italian team followed up with three AAA Class meets last year, including the national outdoor championship. It is not unusual at all that teams use the World Challenge as the last meet in their previous competition classes.

Flyspot One2Three, an indoor team from Poland, did the same the other way around. They attended three AA Class indoor meets in Poland before switching to AAA Class competition at the Flyspot Polish Open in November 2019.

The HF Flying Rebels are the first team in the Top 10 of the world rankings who competed only in the AA Class throughout the whole year. They attended a total of nine meets and have added four more this year before the Hurricane Factory in Prague was closed due to the corona virus crisis. They are currently in 2nd place behind the Polish MAD Team, closely followed by the HF Dragonflies, another Czech 4-way junior team.

All three teams had met each other directly at the Czech Open Indoor Championship, where another Top 10 team of 2019, Flyspot Omega, had joined them for a Czech/Polish AA Class showdown. All four teams are holding the current AA Class top spots. The rankings will probably not grow much any time soon, after a total of 101 AA Class teams were on last year's leaderboard.
