Did You Know...

... that a quick USPA decision gives U.S. teams and competitors peace of mind and extra time?

posted Apr 29th, 2020 - The NSL News reported the cancellation and rescheduling of the FAI Mondial Tanay 2020 with the update on April 24th and followed up a day later with the implications for the International Skydiving Commission's (ISC) member countries in the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI).

The update on April 26th published the response that USPA Competition Committee member Jim Rees had on April 25th for a group of people who were involved in the process of preparing the position of the United States Parachute Association (USPA). Jim Rees is also the USPA Team Manager for the U.S. Formation Skydiving delegation at the FAI Mondial Tanay 2020.

USPA followed up with the official announcement later on April 27th, which confirmed that the U.S. delegation for the FAI Mondial Tanay 2020 next year is the same as it was after the completion of the USPA Nationals 2019. SDC Rhythm XP (4-way Open), Aviatrixx (4-way Women), SDC Core (4-way VFS) and Airspeed XP8 will compete for the United States at the event in August 2021. The official USPA announcement was published at the Parachutist web-page on Monday.

World Meet Postponed to 2021 - Skydiving News April 2020 - Monday, April 27, 2020

In response to the recent announcement by the International Skydiving Commission of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale that it has postponed the 2020 FAI Mondial World Championships (Mondial 2020) to August 7-20, 2021, the USPA Competition Committee, chaired by Kirk Verner, discussed via conference call the criteria that it will use to select qualified competitors to attend the competition. The committee unanimously decided, after discussing the situation with current and former U.S. Parachute Team members from all disciplines, that the current team, based on the results of the 2019 USPA National Championships, will remain intact and will represent the USA and USPA at the rescheduled Mondial 2020. After much discussion and hearing from both sides, the committee also made decisions regarding competitors who had declined their slots originally but are now able to attend: If another competitor already accepted the offer of the slot, then that competitor will retain the slot and the declining competitor will be placed at the top of the waiting list in the order of placement in their event at the 2019 USPA National Championships.

USPA feels as though this will give our USA delegation peace of mind with regard to the 2020 competition season, while allowing them more than ample time to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, train and compete at the highest level.

The actual unanimous decision was made by the seven members of USPA's competition committee: Chair Kirk Verner, Jim Rees, Albert Berchtold, Josh Hall, Larry Hill, Alixandra Hubbard, Chris Wagner. They are regional or national USPA directors who are assigned to the committee by the USPA President.

USPA's Director of Competition & Records is then responsible for the execution of the decisions made by the competition committee. He is also in charge of the U.S. teams for the FAI/ISC events and works together with the team managers in all disciplines.

DeLand resident Steve Hubbard is the USPA Director of Competition & Records and works together with Team Manager Jim Rees for the Formation Skydiving delegation.

Jim Rees was the USPA Team Manager for the FAI Mondial Tanay 2020, and he will probably continue in his position until the completion of the event next year.

Steve Hubbard took the time for a new NSL Live Talk on Wednesday, April 29th, to explain more of the USPA proceedings and provide more background information. He said that USPA was able to react quickly after the FAI/ISC decision, as the competition committee members were well prepared after a few weeks of previous deliberations. He said that a quick decision would give the U.S. teams and competitors peace of mind and more time to adjust their planning for the event next year.
