The latest Coaches Corner with Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett was recorded in February this year. Both Qatar teams were in Zephyrhills training for the Shamrock Showdown 2020. Golden Knights team captain Andrew Starr had joined the conversation during his own 8-way training camp at Skydive City.
Things have changed dramatically ever since. The teams and coaches left, and the Shamrock Showdown had to be canceled when the corona virus crisis began to take its toll on Formation Skydiving training and competition, as it did on all other parts of life in the whole world.
Gary Smith has participated in a few other NSL Live Talk conversations online in the meantime. Jeremie Rollett was also available yesterday, and both Qatar coaches agreed to meet once again, this time only via the internet.
Their teams from Qatar are in the same situation as most of the teams in Europe. Neither indoor nor outdoor training has been possible yet, and travel restrictions are in the way of possibly training at foreign locations. Gary Smith said that NMP PCH HayaBusa has also not been able to train at all.
Skydiving centers and windtunnels in the United States were facing similar restrictions, while there was more freedom to run and restart operations earlier.
Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett discussed the different conditions and the implications of the different timing in countries across the planet as one of the topics during yesterday's NSL Live Talk.

Gary Smith explained that it can even be motivating and rejuvenating to get a break. The Formation Skydiving competition world was different before wind tunnels added indoor training and competition to the team agenda. Especially the addition of FAI/ISC indoor world meets and world cups to the annual schedule created a very busy year for teams, if they wanted to participate at indoor and outdoor events both, as most 4-way teams do.
Teams and competitors used to have a winter break at the end of the outdoor season, as most athletic teams have in other major sports. The winter break was used to recharge with energy and motivation, and it gave teams and coaches enough time to evaluate performance and techniques. Winter and early spring camps at skydiving centers with favorable weather conditions interrupted the winter break in a productive way. The new indoor/outdoor combination has now put more pressure on teams and has made efficient planning more difficult.
Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett both agreed that the teams with a longer break due to the corona virus crisis could come back with a strong desire and a lot of energy to resume training and competition. The corona break could have been more productive than it may have looked like. Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett both plan to bring their Qatar teams to the USPA Nationals at Skydive City in November, as long as the travel restrictions will not be in the way any longer.
