Did You Know...

... that Niklas Hemlin and Mikhails Markine switch from indoor 4-way to outdoor 8-way within four months?

Indoor and outdoor world champions: NMP PCH HayaBusa
posted Jun 9th, 2020 - The subject of generating a reasonable and efficient schedule of indoor and outdoor training and competition became a part of yesterdays NSL Live Talk conversation with Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett. It was difficult enough in the past to balance the two very different competition environments well and successfully if teams attended indoor and outdoor events both. Dive pools and basic rules are identical, while everything else is very different.

Too much indoor training with the wrong timing could even become counter-productive for outdoor competition, and not enough attention to the indoor specifics could also get in the way of ambitious teams who plan to attend indoor meets. Limited resources for most of the teams make it even more challenging to find the right balance.

Reasonable participation in both competition environments is based on the outdoor teams attending the indoor events. There are not enough teams and competitors who focus exclusively on indoor training and competition. The combined leaderboard of yesterday's update was showing the balance between indoor and outdoor teams. The teams in the 4-way Junior event (AA Class) cannot be a part of this equation, although they may generate additional AAA Class indoor participation in the future.

The corona virus crisis brought the difficulties in scheduling the major FAI/ISC events, indoor and outdoor world meets and world cups, even more to the surface. The FAI outdoor world meet, the Mondial Tanay 2020, had to be canceled and rescheduled for August 2021. The FAI indoor world cup was also rescheduled for October this year, and it is not clear yet if the conditions of the corona virus crisis later this year in Belgium will allow the event to take place.

Arizona Airspeed - XPG4 at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019
U.S. national indoor and outdoor teams for 2021: Arizona Airspeed - SDC Rhythm XP
At this point in time, the FAI/ISC event schedule includes the indoor world cup in October 2020, the indoor world meet in April 2021 and the outdoor world meet in August 2021. The order of FAI/ISC events in the following years is still not set yet, as ISC Formation Skydiving Committee Chair Mark Szulmayer explained for the NSL News on May 24th.

Teams have to be sanctioned by the national federations if they want to compete at the FAI/ISC events. They have to qualify in specific ways, according to the rules of each participating FAI member nation. The NSL News has covered several of the qualification events and the corona-related adjustments with updates from different countries.

Most of the national teams are the same for FAI/ISC indoor and outdoor events, even though the balance has been changing since the introduction of FAI/ISC events. Arizona Airspeed have been competing for the U.S. delegation in 4-way at all FAI/ISC indoor and outdoor world meets since 2008, the Golden Knights in 8-way at all outdoor world meets since 2010. FAI/ISC indoor events do not officially include an 8-way world championship yet.

Arizona Airspeed and Golden Knights then both did not win at the USPA Nationals 2019. SDC Rhythm XP and Paraclete XP8 qualified as the national teams for the FAI Mondial Tanay 2020, together with Aviatrixx in 4-way Women.

Arizona Airspeed - XPG4 at the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2020
U.S. national outdoor team in 4-way Women: Aviatrixx
USPA confirmed the same U.S. delegation after the cancellation and rescheduling of the outdoor world meet for August 2021. The next national championship and qualification event in the United States was the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2020. Arizona Airspeed was back on top with the new lineup, and the new XPG4 lineup outscored all other 4-way Women teams easily.

Both U.S. national championships generated a total of five different national teams for the two FAI/ISC world meets next year, which are separated by only four months. Arizona Airspeed and XPG4 will challenge NMP PCH HayaBusa and the French national team in 4-way Women at the indoor world meet in April at Slovakia's Hurricane Factory.

Both U.S. teams then don't have to shift gears from indoor to outdoor quickly, as the Belgian indoor and outdoor world champions have to do with their new lineup. HayaBusa will have to defend the outdoor title four months later in Russia. There they will meet SDC Rhythm XP for the U.S. delegation who will have no other goal than the best performance, and only in outdoor competition.

The U.S. situation was not planned as it turned out. There is no doubt that Airspeed and XPG4 both would also like to compete in Tanay next year. However, they could possibly watch the outdoor action in Russia as indoor world champions if they can manage to defeat NMP PCH HayaBusa and France in Slovakia. Niklas Hemlin and Mikhail Markine will compete at both events, for Airspeed in 4-way at the indoor world meet, and for Airspeed XP8 at the FAI Mondial 2020 four months later. They will switch from indoor 4-way to outdoor 8-way...
