Did You Know...

... that Germany still has to select a national team for the next indoor world meet?

Qualified for the FAI Indoor World Cup 2021: German Top 3 at indoor nationals in 2019
posted Jun 11th, 2020 - The United States were apparently the only country in the Formation Skydiving competition world with a completed national indoor championship this year. As the NSL News reported on June 9th, the Paraclete XP Indoor Championship 2020 generated two different national 4-way indoor teams (Arizona Airspeed, XPG4) compared to the U.S. outdoor delegation (SDC Rhythm XP, Aviatrixx).

Other countries will have to find their own ways how to determine the national indoor teams for the upcoming FAI events. The selection for the FAI Mondial 2020 in Tanay in August next year was done the same way in the countries where the NSL News received information from. The qualified teams after the national championships in 2019 will still compete for their countries in Russia a year later.

The situation could be different for the indoor events. FAI/ISC have scheduled a world cup and a world meet within a time period of six months. The FAI Indoor World Cup in Charleroi, Belgium, was originally scheduled for April this year and has been rescheduled for October. The FAI Indoor World Meet at the Hurricane Factory in Slovakia is still planned for April 2021.

The qualification for the indoor world cup in Belgium is probably not different compared to previous FAI events, when national indoor championships of the previous year were usually the qualification events.

Airfource at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019
The qualification for the indoor world meet six months later could become more complicated if any national indoor championships still take place this year. Skydiving centers and windtunnels are in the process of reopening very soon, which is probably the first step on the way to hosting Formation Skydiving competitions again.

There could be a long time period of almost two years between an indoor qualification event early in 2019 and the indoor world meet in April 2021. As for the outdoor situation in the United States, there could even be a new national championship event before the world meet actually takes place. SDC Rhythm XP, Aviatrixx and Airspeed XP8 qualified for the FAI World Meet in 2021 at the USPA Nationals 2019, while the next USPA Nationals will take place this November at Skydive City.

The German skydiving federation (DFV) has already made the call on the easier part of this topic and copied the decision for outdoor competition - at least for the FAI Indoor World Cup in October this year. The NSL News reported on May 5th that Germany "confirmed the current national teams for the FAI Mondial Tanay 2020 next year". Oceanside AtomiX (4-way Open), Skynamite (4-way Women) and Airbus (8-way) will travel to Russia in August 2021. The qualified German teams after last year's indoor championship are selected for the rescheduled indoor world cup in October, as they all met the required qualification averages.

New Oceanside AtomiX lineup at the Wind Games 2020
It becomes more complicated for the FAI Indoor World Meet 2021 in Slovakia. DFV President Henning Stumpp, member of Martial Ferre's 8-way indoor team Veloce QRF, said that a new qualification will be required for the indoor world meet in 2021.

The German indoor championship was originally scheduled for March 2020. The event was canceled just minutes before teams would enter the flying chamber for Round 1. The indoor situation was very interesting in Germany, as the reigning outdoor champion, Oceanside AtomiX, would have serious competition at the indoor event.

In fact, Airfource represented Germany at the previous indoor world meet at Weembi Lille in 2019. A new Airfource lineup, with Airbus 4-way member Thomas Mack in the lineup, was ready to challenge the AtomiX outdoor champions in March.

The last-minute cancellation of the indoor championship leaves the indoor slot for the next world meet open. There are neither any plans for rescheduling the indoor nationals nor other adequate events that could be used for a new qualification. DFV President Henning Stumpp will deliberate over the situation with the national coaches and then come to a conclusion. The NSL News will follow up on the topic.
