... that the former Aerokart Ak'demie juniors have been jumping from planes?

Aerokart Ak'demie lineup recently at Weembi Lille
posted Jul 21st, 2020 - NSL News updates from the Czech Republic have pointed out a few times that the reigning indoor world champions in 4-way Junior, HF Cubs, are now in training for outdoor skydiving. The story on July 6th was showing HF Cubs member Sabina Cioleková at her first outdoor competition with the Dream Team. Her team mates are trying to catch up with her as soon as possible.

The NSL News story on July 9th followed up with more information related to other former 4-way juniors who have transitioned to outdoor training and competition. This update did not include the youngest French 4-way competitors, who have been training as members of the Aerokart Ak'demie project even longer than their 4-way junior fellows from the other countries.

The French 4-way junior project was in fact the first one. It was launched even before FAI/ISC hosted its first indoor competition, the FAI Indoor World Cup 2014. There was only a AAA Class dive pool and competition draw for two leaderboards (4-way Open, 4-way Women) in Austin, and the French 4-way juniors posted their scores for the ten AAA sequences on the Open Class leaderboard.

The World Challenge had already offered the AA Class of the National Skydiving League format since 2008. FAI/ISC eventually adopted this category for the new 4-way Junior leaderboard, after another year of AAA Class competition for the juniors at the first FAI Indoor World Meet. This time, the two Czech 4-way junior teams completed their ten meet rounds using the AAA sequences.

Outdoor training at Skydive Maubeuge
HF Cubs and Aerokart Ak'demie's current lineup eventually meet each other for the first time at the World Challenge 2016. They still did not compete in the same category yet. The HF Cubs posted scores on the A Class leaderboard in Bedford, together with one of the two Aerokart junior teams. The Aerokart top team competed in the AA Class.

HF Cubs and Aerokart Ak'demie finally ended up on the same leaderboard when FAI/IPC officially included the 4-way Junior event with its own leaderboard at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2017 in Montreal, Canada. Tom Mattoni, Cameron Malie, Eliot and Oscar Massier won with a 28.8 average after the eight AA Class sequences.

The French junior team won this duel again at the FAI Indoor World Cup 2018 before the HF Cubs turned the table at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019. Both teams then moved forward to AAA Class training and competition.

The Aerokart Ak'demie juniors would have been eligible for another FAI/ISC event in 2020, even though they have been training and competing with the AAA Class dive pool. However, the FAI Indoor World Cup 2020 was canceled, and neither HF Cubs nor Aerokart Ak'demie's top team will be back on any AA Class leaderboards.

Aerokart Ak'demie and HF Cubs at the World Challenge 2016
Exit training from a Pilatus Porter in Maubeuge
HF Cubs and Aerokart Ak'demie will probably meet each other on AAA Class leaderboards in the future, even though the Czech team could also sign up for the 4-way Women event at FAI/ISC events. They would still be able to compare their scores directly, as 4-way Open and 4-way Women teams use the same competition draw at FAI/ISC events.

French national coach Mathieu Bernier told the NSL News recently that the former French 4-way juniors have also become outdoor skydivers in the meantime. In fact, they seem to be ahead of the HF Cubs with their outdoor training. Mathieu Bernier said that they were jumping from planes in Maubeuge at the same time when his national senior teams were training in Lille.

The new French outdoor project for the former indoor juniors is at its beginning stage. Aerokart Ak'demie member Tom Mattoni has a total of 15 jumps, while his team mates are ahead with 50 to 300 jumps. Mathieu Bernier is not too concerned with the technical part of the 4-way training. First of all, he wants the young skydivers to become familiar with the very different environment. They know the 4-way dive pool more than well enough.

France has been long known for the young age of national team members. The Aerokart Ak'demie generation could set new records for average age of teams - together with the HF Cubs in the Czech Republic...
