Did You Know...

... that there is still world-class outdoor competition coming this year?

"Ghost games" without audience in football
posted Oct 12th, 2020 - It is a very challenging situation if a competitive athlete in any sport does not have events to attend and cannot show the results of the training. The corona virus crisis has brought this situation to many athletes in many sports.

Amateur sports suffer more than the professional teams and athletes who have the resources to create "bubbles" and finance their measures to bring back sports and entertainment to the audience with income created by the media and advertisers.

Formation Skydiving competition does not have the same resources, and many of the events just had to be canceled. However, the National Skydiving League network has been using the internet to connect teams at different locations for many years to create more interesting leaderboards, and before the major events would bring them together at the same time and at the same place.

Teams have the desire to show the results of their training efforts, to themselves and to others, and they aim to compare their scores and performances on the leaderboards. This desire is only natural for teams and competitors, and the current situation made the connection via the internet an even more basic requirement to continue with Formation Skydiving competition.

First outdoor live meet on home turf with the new lineup in November: Arizona Airspeed
The recent Skydiving Nationals 2.0, organized by Skydiving Chicago, copied the format of the National Skydiving League network and allowed teams at several different locations to connect with each other on the same leaderboard using the same competition draw. A total of 31 teams in three categories (AAA - AA - RRR) used the opportunity to get a competition environment that is better than no competition at all.

The format of the NSL Cloud Mondial 2020 applies the same format that has brought teams together from across the planet for many years. The difference is that it happens at a time when even the top teams and the national teams have no other opportunity to meet each other at a live event.

The format for this event is even more casual compared to the one that the National Skydiving League has applied in the past, and compared to the Skydiving Nationals 2.0 last month. The NSL has posted competition draws weekly in the past, and events on the same date created a combined leaderboard, weekend by weekend.

The situation in the times of the corona virus pandemic makes it very difficult for teams to be available on the same date and use the same competition draw. Considering the special circumstances, the NSL format offered all participating teams a time period until October 25th to complete the 11-round draw and submit the videos.

Last outdoor duel between SDC Rhythm XP and Arizona Airspeed at the USPA Nationals 2019
International 4-Way FS Skydiving Championships in Eloy in November
Some of the videos have already been submitted and even judged by InTime, while the scores and the videos will not be published before the end of the time period. The leaderboard already looks like a world championship by now, even though the competition is open for any team with the same desire of being judged and of posting scores for a definition of the current performance level.

The NSL Cloud Mondial is not even the end of outdoor events this year. Skydive Arizona is hosting a live competition in Eloy where the participating teams will not only connect via the internet.

There have been a few outdoor competitions, even national championships, in countries around the world, and some leagues in the NSL U.S. Network (Arizona, Southern California, Midwest, Florida, Texas) held local and regional meets with light participation and according to the pandemic rules and regulations.

The International FS Championships in November (20 - 22) will be the first live outdoor competition this year where Arizona Airspeed and SDC Rhythm XP meet each other, after comparing their scores indirectly on the NSL Cloud Mondial leaderboard. They did not participate in the Skydiving Nationals 2.0 and now include the eleven rounds in their training before they face each other directly in Eloy. The NSL News will cover the event live from the competition site.
