The International Skydiving Commission (ISC) of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) published a statement today that explains the reasons for the cancellation briefly.
Scheduling FAI-sanctioned international indoor and outdoor world meets and world cups became complicated enough when FAI/ISC decided to include indoor events. However, the reasonable solution for the scheduling challenge was a copy of outdoor competition, where world meets and world cups have been taking turns year by year for a reliable rotation. Indoor world meets would take place in the years when outdoor world cups were scheduled, and vice versa.
It has been challenging enough for teams and competitors since the introduction of FAI-sanctioned indoor events, as they had to balance their training efforts accordingly if they wanted to participate at indoor and outdoor events and peak at the right time. It was only natural that 4-way teams were eager to compete in both environments, as they were using windtunnels for indoor 4-way training ever since the first one was opened for realistic and productive training in Orlando.
The series of cancellations and rescheduling began when the Belgian host could not follow through with the indoor world cup. The cancellation and rescheduling of the FAI Mondial 2020 followed at the end of the month when the indoor world meet was supposed to take place. It became more complicated when the FAI Mondial 2020 was rescheduled for August 2021.
The next outdoor world meet would have been scheduled for 2022, which would be just a year after the Tanay event, and indoor and outdoor world meets would take place in the same year. Today's cancellation of the indoor world meet at the Hurricane Factory Tatralandia at least eliminates one of the problems.
However, there are more than enough other scheduling issues left to be resolved, and the ISC plans to take them on at the next plenary meeting at the beginning of next year. It was supposed to take place in Bukarest, Romania, and has now been changed to an online platform...
