Did You Know...

... that Airspeed competitors of four different generations joined forces for a big-way celebration?

Larry Hill on the way back to the landing area
posted Nov 27th, 2020 - The 4-Way FS Skydiving Championships at Skydive Arizona did not end with the completion of Round 10. It was the awards ceremony at the Bent Prop restaurant later in the evening that eventually concluded the event.

However, there was another special event that happened on Saturday, the second and last day of the actual 4-way competition. Skydive Arizona founder and owner Larry Hill had recently finished the restoration of his Twin Beech, a popular jump plane long ago.

He has been flying his DC3 randomly at skydiving events, as well, and he invited teams and competitors of the 4-way competition to take on a formation flight of both planes together and build a larger formation to celebrate the completion of the 4-way meet after Round 10.

It was a unique situation when both planes fired up their engines and began with the boarding procedure. Larry Hill himself was excited to see this happening and remembered his own early days when DC3 and Twin Beech both were the most popular jump planes. He shared some of his memories with the NSL News on the way back from the boarding to the landing area.

Big-way preparations: Airspeed member Niklas Hemlin
The big-way group had knowledge and experience available when preparations for the formation load began. Original Arizona Airspeed members Dan BC and Kirk Verner have organized similar big-way projects many times in the past, and Craig Girard could contribute his own wealth of experiences.

Four Airspeed generations (Dan BC, Kirk Verner - Craig Girard, Eliana Rodriguez - Niklas Hemlin, Mikhail Markine - Joey Marshall, Chris Kuhlmann, Taylor Buffington) worked together and eventually boarded the two legendary jump planes after a relatively short time for preparations. The big-way was squeezed into the time period between Round 10 and award ceremony, which was shortly before the sunset.

All Airspeed members of the four generations are still active and had competed in the 4-way competition last weekend, except for Kirk Verner, who was in Eloy to support Paraclete's XPG4 team. He is a current member of Airspeed XP8, who will compete for the United States at the FAI Mondial 2020 next year.

Eliana Rodriguez, Dan BC and Craig Girard were the Jets in Jerry Elliott's lineup. Niklas Hemlin, Mikhail Markine, Joey Marshall, Chris Kuhlmann and Taylor Buffington (camera) are Airspeed's current 4-way lineup.

NSL Live Talk with Arizona Airspeed on 22 November 2020
Arizona Airspeed in Round 5
The big-way celebration came after Arizona Airspeed had finished with a new historic 29.3 world record average, which was honored again a few hours later during the award ceremony.

Arizona Airspeed was actually done for the weekend. Sunday was only a weather day, which did not need to be used. The complete lineup still came back to Skydive Arizona a day after the end of the competition, big-way jump and award ceremony on Saturday.

It was time for a new NSL Live Talk after the historic 29.3 performance in Eloy. The NSL News coverage of last weekend's competition had started with an Airspeed review of the NSL Cloud Mondial 2020 and a preview of the upcoming competition on the day before Round 1.

The second conversation with Airspeed in Eloy was then a review of the world record performance on the day after the completion of the event.
