Did You Know...

... that CTR Optimum's 8-way team won in Brazil without much competition?

CTR Optimum 4-way team in action
posted Dec 14th, 2020 - The NSL News reported the results of the Brazilian Outdoor Nationals 2020 with the update on November 25th. CTR Optimum won the next 4-way title after a battle with the military Cometas team. The meet was decided in two rounds (6 and 7) where the young challengers struggled with exit and slot-switching sequences.

The national championships in Brazil also include an 8-way competition that the team Action, guided by Pedro Ushizima Jr., has dominated since 2015. Team Action have represented Brazil at the world meets in 2016 and 2018.

The corona virus crisis had an impact on the outcome of the 8-way competition this year. It was a very unfortunate impact, as the 8-way competition was promising a very similar battle for the championship title as in 4-way, where CTR Optimum had to fend off the challenging Cometas.

Three CTR Optimum 4-way team members (André Ferraz, George Narita, Jorge Neto) had invited five friends of the team (Alan Uemehara, David Rodrigues, Augusto Melo Rosa, Débora Brescianini, Débora Shroeder) and videographer Daniel Secchen to train this year and compete at the national championships.

It was not the first time that the CTR Optimum 4-way team would form an 8-way team for their CTR project, as well. It also happened in 2011, and the CTR 8-way team represented Brazil in Dubai 2012.

However, it was a different 8-way lineup, and the 4-way team did not have double-duties in both events. Original CTR Optimum 4-way member of 2005, Pedro Ushizima Jr., was now guiding only the CTR 8-way team, including current 4-way member George Narita, and he resumed 8-way action with his own team project in 2015.

This year's CTR 8-way lineup completed almost 100 training jumps, on top of the 4-way indoor and outdoor training for the three CTR Optimum members.

The 8-way competition in Brazil 2020 was promising the first serious battle for the top spot, as the CTR 8-way team had arrived at the same level that Pedro Ushizima's Action team performed on in the past years.

Unfortunately, Action member Renato Monteiro Diogo and alternate Ricardo Pereira dos Santos both contracted the virus in the run-up to the national championships, and the Action team decided to cancel their participation. The CTR 8-way team won the gold medals with a 9.8 average and without any serious competition.

Pedro Ushizima Jr. had a different 8-way lineup this year, as well. He and Adriano Badaro, Andre Luiz Pereira dos Santos, Carlos Cabral and Cleverson Gregio, came back with three new 8-way members (Eduardo Moreschi, Eduardo Reichenheim, Renato Monteiro Diogo) and Cristian Rodrigues still on camera.

The team was training in 2020 and planning to win their next 8-way title in Brazil, then compete once again for their country at the FAI Mondial Tanay 2020 next year. However, the CTR 8-way team are the official 8-way champions and would be the national team for the world meet.

The question is how the Brazilian teams and the federation will deal with the extraordinary corona virus crisis situation. The three CTR Optimum 4-way members would have to be ready to perform double-duties next year in Tanay if Brazil sanctions and sends teams in both events.

Brazilian 4-way and 8-way teams were in synch with participation at the world meets until 2001 and then missed the next two events completely. CTR Optimum brought Brazil back on the international stage in 2006, and 8-way teams from Brazil have been at the world meets in 2012, 2016 and 2018, each time with Pedro Ushizima Jr. as the leader.
