Did You Know...

... that Mikael Kaulanen is back in action for Finland's Just4Fun?

Mikael Kaulanen with Ulf Liljenbäck and Team Spaï in 2006 and 2007
posted Jan 15th, 2021 - The NSL News announced Finland joining the World Tunnel League after an update from the Finnish Indoor Nationals on 2 April 2017. The indoor comeback of Finland's national team of 1997, Chymos/Max 4/Blackjack, had inspired team member Vesa Vuorenkoski to launch the new league with regular meets at the Fööni wind tunnel in Helsinki.

Blackjack did not continue after their last meet, the World Challenge 2019 in Bedford, and some of the original members eventually came back with other teams. Vesa Vuorenkoski began training and competing with Just4Fun, who turned out to become the best Finnish 4-way team behind the Pro Team.

Vesa Vuorenkoski now informed the NSL News that he has to take a temporary break, after his medical doctor denied him all flying activities until at least April this year, due to some health problems.

However, he is still as involved in his team's progression and the indoor events as he was before the break, and he helped to recruit a new team member for his point slot. Mikael Kaulanen from Sweden has joined Just4Fun, and he will begin training with the team in Helsinki at the upcoming camp on January 22 - 23. Coach David Grauwels continues to work with the new lineup, and Vesa Vuorenkoski will support the team to make the transition as successful as possible.

Vesa Vuorenkoski said that it was important for Just4Fun to find a new team member with comprehensive meet experiences, as the Finnish Indoor Nationals 2021 are coming soon at the end of March, and Just4Fun are the defending national champions. Team goal is still to win the national indoor championships and represent Finland at the next FAI world meet.

The Finnish Indoor Nationals 2021 are also supposed to include the Scandinavian Indoor Championship, if the travel situation in March allows teams to visit the Finnish capital city. Mikael Kaulanen has international meet experiences after his 4-way career in Sweden and brings them into his new team. He is a Finnish citizen and would be able to represent Finland at FAI sanctioned international indoor and outdoor events.

Mikael Kaulanen is ready to replace Vesa Vuorenkoski in the point slot after training and competing in all four slots with his previous teams. He almost won his first Swedish 4-way titles with Team Spaï in 2006 and 2007. Only Team 42, with current Echochamber member Mattias Nord in the lineup, denied him the top spot in Sweden by then.

He tried to win his first national championships together with Ulf Liljenbäck in the Spaï lineup, who is now training and competing for Echochamber together with Mattias Nord.

Mikael Kaulanen with Rikard Rodensjö and Bardagi in Dubai 2012
Mattias Nord, his opponent in 2006 and 2007, eventually became his team mate when some of the Swedish top competitors formed the Gryttjom Volo lineup in 2013. They took the top spot in Sweden between 2013 and 2016, together with Emil Einarsson and Kenneth Eriksson.

Mattias Nord then continued with Echochamber in 2017, first as the team's coach, then in a player-coach position at the outdoor activities, finally as a full indoor and outdoor team member. Echochanber have now become one of the best amateur teams in the world, and Gryttjom Volo did not come back. Mikael Kaulanen helped out for other teams here and there and waited for the next opportunity.

Mikael Kaulanen was team mate with another current Echochamber member, as well. He and Rikard Rodensjö trained and competed together for Evolution in 2008 and 2009, guided by coach Joey Jones. Both then switched to Bardagi in 2010 and competed for Sweden at the next two FAI world meets, first in Menzelinsk 2010, then in Dubai 2012, where they posted a 19.1 outdoor average.

The new Just4Fun member surely brings more than enough international 4-way experiences back to Finland, and Just4Fun has a good chance to maintain the indoor top spot successfully until Vesa Vuorenkoski may come back to 4-way action.
