Did You Know...

... that the Southwest Skydiving League was launched in March 2000?

Eliana Rodriguez with DeLand Tunnel Rage at the USPA Nationals 2000
posted Apr 30th, 2021 - The Arizona Skydiving League is inviting 4-way teams and competitors once again to visit Skydive Arizona this weekend for the league's 4th meet in 2021. AZXP8 and XPG4 member Michelle Karamon organizes the upcoming meet without her ASL partner Eliana Rodriguez this time, and she gets coaching help from her 8-way team mate, Arizona Airspeed's Niklas Hemlin.

The NSL News covered the ASL restart in January 2019, after a 3-year break between 2016 and 2018. The first recorded meet of the Arizona Skydiving League goes back to 2007 though, when Arizona Divewerkz began to bring back the league meets to Eloy that the Southwest Skydiving League had offered between 2000 and 2006.

The NSL News records of the Southwest Skydiving League have a large gap between the inauguration of the NSL Network's newest league in 2000 and the 2004 season. Information of this time period can only be found in the NSL archives, as the current website was built in 2004.

The NSL News found the scores of the first meet in March 2000, together with a preview and a meet report after the completion of the 6-round competition. ASL co-director Eliana Rodriguez was still in Florida at that time and won the USPA Nationals 2000 in the Intermediate Class with DeLand Tunnel Rage and team mate Thomas Hughes. She moved to Arizona in 2002 to join the Airspeed project, after winning the 4-way Women gold medals with Synchronicity at the FAI World Meet 2001. She started with Airspeed Zulu/Dragon/Blue in 2002 and was selected for the Odyssey lineup in 2005.

Cave Girls at the SWSL 2000 season opener

NSL News on 25 March 2000: BIG DAY FOR SOUTHWEST SKYDIVING LEAGUE

It's the season opener for the new league, and the SWSL management has prepared things for a great start. Skydive Arizona in Eloy is hosting the season opener. Omniskore will be judging and putting the scores on TV screens and the internet. World champion Dan BC will be the event coach and work with all participating teams through the competition. Some of his former Airspeed team mates will be on site, as well.

Hopefully they will also get in the air and put some new Airspeed scores on the leaderboard. Five teams had already signed up for the whole 2000 season, and the SWSL is expecting more teams to show up this morning. In addition to the top teams Airspeed Vertical and Airspeed Zulu, Elsinore Matrix will also compete on a high scoring level. Another good team is expected to visit from Perris Valley.

The Southwest Skydiving League is applying the National Skydiving League's handicap system, created by Optic Nerve member Dr. Joel Shugar. Each team will have a chance to win the meet and the league championship. However, only the highest-scoring team will qualify for the NSL Playoffs 2000. Tomorrow, the Florida Skydiving League will hold its third season meet with some more top teams posting their scores on the east coast.

The NSL meet weekends are already getting busier early in the year. Once the season is in full swing, there will be weekends with up to five NSL events at different locations throughout the country. The NSL headquarters will make an effort to post all scores and additional information as soon as possible after each meet. The scores of the Southwest Skydiving League meet can be found at the Omniskore website. The scores of the Florida Skydiving League meet will be posted tomorrow night on the FSL homepage.

Airspeed Zulu at the SWSL 2000 season opener

NSL News on 26 March 2000: 9 TEAMS AT THE FIRST SOUTHWEST SKYDIVING LEAGUE MEET

Five teams competed in the Open/Advanced Class, four teams in the Intermediate Class. Airspeed Zulu and Elsinore Matrix gave each other an exciting race over the first three rounds. Zulu then ran away to finish the 6-round meet with a 16.7 average. Matrix had 15.5 average on the leaderboard at the end of the meet.

Both teams improved their averages from the Valentine's Meet in February (Zulu from 14.5 to 16.7 and Matrix from 14.2 to 15.5), even though this draw was not an easy one.

The race for the 3rd place in the raw scores between AZ Inertia and Perris High Pressure was even closer. Inertia finished one point ahead of High Pressure. Inertia also won the Overall Class where the NSL handicap was applied. All About Charly won the Intermediate Class competition.

The scores are posted at the Omniskore competiton page. Today, the Florida Skydiving League will be running its third season meet. The draw is posted at the FSL 3 competiton page.
