Did You Know...

... that Frost started and finished on the Open Class leaderboard?

Original Frost lineup in 1998
posted May 26th, 2021 - The NSL News launched the new series of the Advanced Class history and the team career of the USPA champions in this category with the first official winner, ZSpot from Skydive City, even though the Advanced Class of 1998 was not the same as it is today.

In fact, a complete overview of all USPA Advanced Class champions between 1999 and 2017 was already posted by the NSL News on 6 November 2017. Two more different teams have won the Advanced Class title ever since, Savage XP in 2018 and Redline XP in 2019, both with player-coach Kirk Verner in the lineup.

The Advanced Class overview disregarded ZSpot in 1998, as the Advanced Class rules at that time were more similar to the current rules for AA/Intermediate and A Class. Team Frost's second lineup (Sally Hathaway, Carlos Curti, Niklas Gummeson, Robert Healy, with Tony Hathaway on camera) won the first USPA Advanced Class championship title in 1999 with the current rules.

Frost were recreational 4-way competitors and did not feel like moving up and competing with the 4-way Open Class teams. The team discontinued completely after two years of intensive 4-way training and competition. However, there was a comeback with the third Frost lineup in 2002. The USPA Advanced Class champions of 1999 added one more year and reappeared on the Open Class leaderboard, where they had launched the team career in 1998. Frost never competed in the Intermediate Class, or in any other category with a reduced dive pool.

2nd Frost lineup in 1999

NSL News on 27 June 2002: Frost has a comeback

Team Frost has been around for many years. Frost made their first appearance at the U.S. Nationals in 1998 with team members Carlos Curti, Niklas Gummeson, Ron Hill and Sally Hathaway. With a 12.6 average Frost finished tied in 10th place of the Open Class competition.

In 1999, Ron Hill went to the U.S. Army boot camp with the goal to join the Golden Knights. He was replaced by Robert Healy. Frost competed throughout the 1999 season of the Florida Skydiving League and posted a 12.5 season average. Well prepared with a lot of competition practice, Frost won the USPA Nationals the same year with a 13.6 average in Sebastian.

For the 2000 season, Frost would have to step up into the Open Class at the USPA Nationals. But only 50% of the team decided to continue, team founder Carlos Curti and Sally Hathaway. Tony Hathaway and Steve Johnson took the Frost slots when Robert Healy left for Elsinore Matrix and Niklas Gummeson for the PD Factory Team. Frost 2000 competed at some of the FSL meets that year for a 11.5 season average and did not even bother going to the USPA Nationals 2000 to compete in the Open Class.

Things did not get much better for Frost and founder Carlos Curti in 2001. Sally Hathaway now left the team for Synchronicity, the U.S. 4-way Women team, who eventually won the gold medal at the world meet later in 2001. Her husband Tony would film her team. There was no Frost in 2001 any longer.

Last Frost lineup at the USPA Nationals 2002
Frost were still not done yet. Carlos Curti is a committed and enthusiastic 4-way competitor. He picked up the pieces at the end of the 2001 season to build a new and very strong lineup. Niklas Gummeson was done with the PD Factory Team project. Ron Hill had left the U.S. Army, and things were ready for a reunion. The new Frost 2002 lineup carefully selected Glen Mendez as the fourth team member. Glen Mendez had trained and competed with Tunnel Rage who won the USPA Nationals 2000 in the Intermediate Class.

Frost with Glen Mendez had just begun the team training for the 2002 season with great motivation and potential when disaster struck. Glen Mendez lost his life in a skydiving accident early in the year. There was a lot of frustration since the team's spirit with Glen Mendez had been great. However, Frost still did not give up. It was difficult to find a replacement since the 2002 season was already in full swing, and the other teams had their lineups together. However, the Frost things still fell in place with a local solution.

Teiwaz member Kurt Gaebel has been friends with the Frost members for years and did not have a very busy 2002 schedule with his own team. Teiwaz had plans only for the FSL meets that year. Kurt Gaebel filled in for Frost camps here and there, and it worked out well enough to more plans. The new Frost 2002 lineup had their first outing at the FSL meet last weekend. More training and more FSL meets are scheduled with Kurt Gaebel on double duties, and Frost also plan to attend the USPA Nationals 2002. Whatever happened in the past - Frost is back.
