Did You Know...

... that Arizona Divewerkz followed Mass Defiance's example?

Arizona Divewerks: AA/Intermediate Class in 2005
posted Jul 15th, 2021 - USPA's next 4-way Advanced Class champion were Arizona Divewerkz in 2006. They succeeded Mass Defiance, the first Advanced Class champion who continued by moving up into the 4-way Open Class competition.

The Mass Defiance example might have been encouraging for Arizona Divewerkz, as they also continued with the same lineup who won the Advanced Class medals in 2006. In fact, three team members (Blane Boynton, Cindy Nieves, Annaliese Peterson) even added another year to their 4-way Open Class experiences and finished with a new team record average in 2008.

Arizona Diverwerkz launched their team project when the Southwest Skydiving League was launched in 2004. The original lineup (Murel Addison, Blane Boynton, Paul Gatling, Annaliese Peterson, with Kelly Green on camera) attended four SWSL meets before the USPA Nationals 2004. The August meet took place at Skydive Perris, host of the USPA Nationals in October, and the new Arizona team, together with 17 other 4-way teams, had the opportunity to get familiar with the event site.

Arizona Divewerkz started out in the AA/Intermediate Class at their first national championships and finished in 11th place with an 8.7 average.

USPA Advanced Class champions in 2006
The same AZDW lineup was back for the 2005 season and were even better prepared for the national championships.

This time, they attended five meets of the Southwest Skydiving League before the same trip to Perris in October. It was the time period when hosts of USPA Nationals hosted the event in two consecutive years.

Arizona Divewerkz were one of the expected top contenders in 2005, and they had to settle with USPA bronze medals after a very exciting 4-team battle for the Intermediate Class top spot. The same lineup had increased their average from 8.7 to 12.6 which was just four points short of the winning number.

However, Arizona Divewerkz moved up into the AAA Class world despite missing the top spot in USPA's Intermediate Class competition of 2005.

Cindy Nieves replaced Paul Gatling in 2006, and the team decided to leave the Intermediate Class behind.

The Southwest Skydiving League eventually split up into the Arizona Skydiving League and the Southern California Skydiving League, and Arizona Divewerkz began to organize the events on their home turf at Skydive Arizona.

Once again, they used the ASL meets to get the team ready for the USPA Nationals, which would be hosted by Skydive Arizona in 2006. They could not be more familiar with the site of the national championships as they were in October a year after the competition in Perris.

The results at the USPA Nationals 2006 spoke for themselves, and Arizona Divewerkz did not have any serious opposition on the top of the AAA/Advanced Class leaderboard with their 14.6 average.

It became even better a year later. AZDW continued with the same lineup in 4-way Open, together with Mass Defiance in their second year. Now both Advanced Class champions of 2005 and 2006 were back in 4-way Open after USPA gold medals in the Advanced Class.

Annaliese Peterson, Cindy Nieves and Blane Boynton then completed a very successful 4-way team career with Arizona Divewerkx at the USPA Nationals 2008, where they posted a new team record average of 19.0 with former Airspeed member Chad Smith in the lineup. They even outscored Mass Defiance (16.7) at the same event and placed 5th in the 4-way Open USPA rankings.
