Did You Know...

... that the French national team in 4-way Women could face an unexpected challenge?

4-way Women gold medals in Australia 2018: France
posted Aug 8th, 2021 - Last and not least, the NSL Power Rankings in 4-way Women complete the preview of the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 in the three Formation Skydiving competition events. It is the youngest of the three traditional events and was introduced to world championships for the first time in 2001.

The 4-way Women competition was hit harder by the implications of the corona virus crisis than the previously covered events in 4-way Open and 8-way Open. Only four national teams are registered for the competition, which is the lowest number of participating teams in the history of the event.

This is not different compared to the other Formation Skydiving competition events that begin with Round 1 on Tuesday. However, the impact is still harder due to the fact that one of the most serious medal contenders will not be present in Tanay this week.

The top contenders and defending FAI medalists of 2018, in 4-way Open and 8-way Open, will be competing for the FAI medals and most likely create exciting events. This is not the case in 4-way Women, where the British national team, NFTO, had to withdraw from the event together with the complete British Formation Skydiving delegation.

French 4-way Women lineup at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020
NFTO won the FAI silver medals in Australia 2018, and the distance to the French 4-way Women world champions were significantly reduced in 2019, after the personnel change in the French lineup and Mathieu Bernier's decision to focus mainly on 8-way competition.

Mathieu Bernier was still planning to win the gold medals in 4-way Women, as well, as the NSL News explained in several updates of the past two years.

However, NFTO realized the new opportunity, with a French 4-way Women team training much less than in the French history of this event, and they went to work with their new team member, former Satori member Julia Swallow.

Julia Swallow was in the new NFTO lineup who defeated the French 4-way Women indoor team at the Wind Games 2020, while the indoor competition in January 2020 was the only 4-way meet for NFTO with Julia Swallow so far.

NFTO still could have made Mathieu Bernier's plans of double gold in 4-way Women and 8-way Open very difficult, as he had to go through his own personnel changes.

France and NFTO at the FAI Outdoor World Meet in 2018
Bubbles at the Russian Indoor Cup 2021
Clementine Le Bohec, Pamela Lissajoux, Christine Malnis and Sophia Pecout won the FAI gold medals easily for France in Australia 2018, with Michel Laynaud on camera. This 4-way Women lineup would have even won the FAI bronze medals in 4-way Open with their 25.7 average.

The lineup changed when Pamela Lissajoux did not continue after winning the gold medals in Australia. The 4-way Women alternate, Gaelle Giesen, had her opportunity after years in the French B-teams and became the new full member.

Then Clementine Praet stepped back at the end of 2019, after a year of training and competition in 4-way and 8-way. Mathieu Bernier filled the open 8-way slot himself and even helped out in the 4-way Women lineup until Pamela Lissajoux agreed to come back only in 4-way. Christine Malnis, Sophia Pecout, Gaelle Giesen and Pamela Lissajoux will now try to defend the 4-way Women gold medals and win gold in 8-way too, still with Michel Laynaud on camera.

Only the Russian 4-way Women team Bubbles might be able to challenge France in the absence of NFTO. Alena Chistova is back in the lineup, and the team's indoor scores have been very impressive at Russia's Indoor Cup in April. The French Weembi Girls of Aerodyne Maubeuge could face the same challenge coming from an unexpected side...
