Did You Know...

... that the Canadian Nationals were a very busy event for the Bisson family?

4Astrophe at the Canadian Outdoor Nationals 2021
posted Aug 27th, 2021 - The NSL News reported the 4-way scores of the Canadian Outdoor Nationals 2021 with the update on July 26th. The story included a brief overview of the fascinating skydiving history that has connected father Richard Bisson with his daughter Valerie Bisson and his son Yannick Bisson, united in freefall for the 4-way team 4Astrophe.

The Bisson 3-way, with Nicolas Malley and videographer Sean Paquette in the lineup, have won the Canadian 4-way title two consecutive times now, while the skydiving activities of the family members are not ending at 4-way competition at all.

This year, all Bissons together also won the 8-way competition with Les Bombes and 10-way Speed with Funnel Factory.

4Astrophe matched their 14.8 average after the nine rounds of the Canadian Outdoor Nationals 2019 exactly after ten rounds last month. Richard Bisson said that the national championships in 2019 were the last outdoor jumps for 4Astrophe. The team was happy with the performance considering the pandemic break and the new slot assignments.

4Astrophe had decided to change their slots after the national championships in 2019. It was a strategic move to increase the performance in the longer term. Yannick Bisson switched from point to outside center, his father from outside center to point. Valerie Bisson became inside center, Nicolas Malley the tail.

Indoor training began for the FAI Indoor World Cup 2020 in Belgium, and the plans changed after the cancellation of the event in March 2020. Skyventure Montreal has been closed ever since the corona virus crisis began, and Valerie Bisson had started working as a physiotherapist in a Montreal hospital. She decided not to jump during the pandemic to make sure she wouldn't run the risk of being infected with the virus.

As a result, 4Astrophe was on a hold for 14 months. The skydiving activities resumed in May this year, however, the weather in Canada allowed only the completion of 50 training jumps before the national championships. 4Astrophe focused mostly on exits due to the lack of outdoor training.

Yannick Bisson, who appeared in the NSL News first time when he was 11 years of age and competed with 4Astrophe at the Canadian Indoor Nationals 2013 winning his first 4-way title, was not done after the traditional Formation Skydiving events this year. He also competed in Artistic Freestyle as the videographer for his girlfriend Coralie Boudreault, and he won the Canadian title in this category with team Flashpoint, as well. It was his first outdoor competition in Freestyle.

Artistic Freestyle: Coralie Boudreault and Yannick Bisson
Father Richard Bisson said that their Freestyle performance was impressive considering the very low number of training jumps they could do before the competition. Coralie Boudreault's plans for the lineup changed twice when other potential videographers had to withdraw.

Coralie Boudreault was also competing with the whole Bisson family in 8-way, and she brought her mother Stephanie Gauthier into the lineup of Les Bombes. Marcel Faguy and 4Astrophe's 4-way videographer Sean Paquette completed the lineup, with Daniel Lepot on 8-way camera. The second 8-way team was a combination of the two 4-way teams Flying Fuzion and Altitude.

The Bissons won in 4-way and 8-way quite easily, while they had more work in 10-way Speed. Seven 8-way members joined forces with three locals, and the Bisson Funnel Factory were 0.5 seconds behind going into the last round. Then they won Round 4 and the next title.

Last and not least, Valerie Bisson had additional activities at the national championships, as well. Besides competing in the three Formation Skydiving events, she was also one of the main organizers of the whole event. It was a very busy competition for the Bisson family...
