Did You Know...

... that Gary Smith won FAI gold and bronze at the same 4-way event?

Friends and Qatar coaching colleagues: Jeremie Rollett and Gary Smith
posted Aug 31st, 2021 - The aftermath of the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 continues with NSL Live Talk. NMP PCH HayaBusa and Qatar Tigers coach Gary Smith had enough time for a brief conversation during his recent visit in Qatar.

This time he did not travel there for a training camp or other activities with the team. He and Qatar Falcons 8-way coach Jeremie Rollett are helping the host of the next CISM military world championship with the event preparations. Jeremie Rollett is the official meet director for the event.

Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollet, both former 4-way and 8-way world champions, have been working together for Qatar's Formation Skydiving delegation for several years. Gary Smith had more luck with the pursuit of FAI medals with Qatar teams at world meets than his French coaching colleague.

Jeremie Rollett started with coaching the Tigers 4-way team, while Gary Smith was working with the Falcons in 8-way. The Tigers had very strong competition when Jeremie Rollett guided them to the world meet in Australia 2018. NMP PCH HayaBusa and Arizona Airspeed were out of reach, and France had two strong 4-way teams and won gold (4-way Women) and bronze (4-way Open). The Qatar Tigers ended up in 4th place.

NMP PCH HayaBusa - Qatar Tigers at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020
8-way bronze medals in Australia 2018
Gary Smith and the Qatar Falcons benefited from the French focus on 4-way, which resulted in the first world meet since 1985 without a French 8-way team.

The Golden Knights and Russia were out of reach in 8-way, while the bronze medals were available for other teams.

The Qatar Falcons were well trained, and the world's 8-way amateur teams could not challenge the Falcons for the bronze medal position. Gary Smith won the first set of FAI Formation Skydiving medals for the Qatar delegation in Australia 2018.

Gary Smith and Jeremie Rollett then switched positions after the world meet in 2018, as the NSL News reported on 14 December 2018. They thought it would be beneficial for the teams to work with different coaches.

This turned out to be true, as the Qatar Formation Skydiving delegation won their next set of FAI bronze medals, earlier this month in Tanay. This time, the Qatar Tigers moved from 4th to 3rd place, and again with Gary Smith.

4-way bronze medals in Tanay 2021
Gary Smith benefited once again from the opposite situation. France had highly invested into 8-way training and competition, and the Qatar Falcons had no chance to defend their bronze medals against the 8-way giants from the United States, France and Russia.

At the same time, France was vulnerable in 4-way, and the Qatar Tigers with Gary Smith were just waiting for an opportunity - just as much as the Russian Bubbles were able to upset the French team in 4-way Women.

Gary Smith is the first one to admit that the Tigers had a great opportunity, even though the bronze medals were surely not a gift. France was impressively strong in 4-way Open with a 25.3 average, and the Qatar Tigers had to work for their bronze medals. However, it turned out that Gary Smith guided NMP PCH HayaBusa to their next and 4th set of gold medals and added the bronze medals to his collection as a full-time coach.

Winning two sets of medals in the same event as a coach is another new record in the history of Formation Skydiving competition, and Gary Smith explains some of his recipes during the NSL Live Talk. He gave NMP PCH HayaBusa a lot of credit though for being very self-sufficient...
