Did You Know...

... that only Doug Barron continues for SDC Rhythm XP after the USPA Nationals?

Doug Barron with SDC Rhythm XP at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020
posted Sep 19th, 2021 - This weekend's new scores from the Midwest Skydiving League are coming just a few days after a surprising announcement from the most prominent 4-way representative of this U.S. region and a league of the NSL Network where SDC Rhythm XP have continued a long tradition of Midwest 4-way competition in the most successful way.

JaNette and Steve Lefkowitz launched the SDC Rhythm XP team project in the Midwest from scratch in 2007 and won the first USPA 4-way championship title for this region of the United States. The current lineup are still the reigning national 4-way champions and won silver medals for the U.S. delegation at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020.

Rhythm announced on Friday that almost the complete lineup will withdraw from active 4-way training and competition after the USPA Nationals 2021. The 2019 lineup, still with JaNette Lefkowitz in the inside center slot, won the USPA gold medals in 2019, which they did not have to defend in 2020 after the cancellation of the event.

This year's national championship next month in Eloy will be the last competition for the current lineup with Christy Frikken, and they will have a re-match with the main opponent of 2019, Arizona Airspeed. One current team member, Doug Barron, will continue and re-build the team after the USPA Nationals.

Andrew Happick and Doug Barron with VTSD in 2009
Doug Barron was recruited by JaNette and Steve Lefkowitz for SDC Rhythm XP in 2016, together with his long-time team mate and close friend Andrew Happick. Christy Frikken and Mikhail Markine had left the team at the end of the 2015 season, JaNette and Steve Lefkowitz had to re-bild the team.

Doug Barron and Andrew Happick were almost as closely connected in 4-way teams as JaNette and Steve Lefkowitz were, as the NSL News explained on 8 January 2016 and has pointed out regularly ever since.

In fact, Doug Barron and Andrew Happick started training and competing together several years before SDC Rhythm XP was launched. The NSL News had reported on 9 February 2010 how they transitioned from their Virginia Tech 4-way team VTSD to Carolina Turbo XP.

Together they had won USPA's Intermediate Class gold medals in 2009, then followed up with Advanced Class gold medals at the USPA Nationals 2010. Now they are the only 4-way competitors who have won USPA gold medals in all three categories (Intermediate 2009 - Advanced 2010 - Open 2019) and won silver medals at a world championship. Doug Barron is still not done yet. He seems to be ready to pursue world meet gold medals:

Big announcement from Rhythm. After this upcoming Nationals in October, Andrew, Christy, Justin and Steve will be stepping back from the competition team. However, the competition team will continue with Doug at the helm rebuilding. From a coaching perspective, Doug and his new teammates will continue the great skydiving and wind tunnel events and coaching we have always done in the past. In addition, Andrew will continue with his events and coaching as a member of the Rhythm coaching organization. Steve and JaNette will also continue events and coaching under the Rhythm name with no change through January, but after our January events, and for the next year it will be at a reduced capacity as they focus on family and JaNette’s healing. Christy has always done great things in the coaching world under her business, Fury coaching, and an occasional partner to Rhythm, and she’ll continue to do that going forward. Justin will remain involved as well, but will return to his full-time professor gig.

We are extremely proud of all we have accomplished over 14 years of competing and coaching as Rhythm. As individuals and a team, we won the US Nationals in every FS discipline there is. This August, we took silver at the World Championships. We also won or medaled at various wind tunnel competitions in 4way and 8way over the years, including winning 4way and 8way at the US Indoor National Championships, and winning 8way at the World Indoor Championships. As we take next year to rebuild, it’s bittersweet because we love working and training together. If we were sick of each other, this would be a whole lot easier! We each just have personal responsibilities and goals that would make it impossible to continue the commitment needed to compete at the highest level. We are confident, however, that Doug will succeed as he takes on the challenging but exciting task of rebuilding.

From a coaching perspective, Rhythm, along with our partners, has built an organization that is second to none. From The All-American Invitationals to our Rookie Skills camps, from tunnel workshops that coach over 200 hours every year to individual team coaching, from the Rhythm 101 and 401 apps, to the founding of the Women’s Skydiving Network, we are proud of contributing to the growth of skydivers at every level, across the globe. And to be clear, you can expect to see the same strong presence from the Rhythm coaching organization going forward!

We’d like to thank our supporters over the years. We have the best fans, who are truly also great friends, and the best sponsors, without whom we could never have accomplished all that we did. We look forward to working with you at an upcoming jumping event or tunnel workshop, and we’re excited to see what the next generation of Rhythm competitors achieve! Go Rhythm!
