Did You Know...

... that three CTR Optimum members won in Brazil with INIT-Y?

Brazilian 4-way champions of 2021: INIT-Y
posted Oct 5th, 2021 - Brazil's national championships took place in September, as well, and the participation was just as limited as it has been in other countries in the two years of the corona virus crisis.

However, a smaller number of teams did not make the event less exciting, as it has also happened in several other countries. The situation in Brazil was even more interesting due to the changes on the top level that the NSL News reported earlier this year.

The update from Brazil on July 29th was related to the July competition of the Brazilian Tunnel League, where two lineups of the long-standing 4-way champion team CTR Optimum surprised the attending teams and the audience both.

In fact, even three of the CTR Optimum members of the last two years did not know that there would be a second lineup, Optimum Prime, with a lineup that included their CTR team mate André Ferraz, who won the indoor competition together with his wife Juliana Sé and Pedro Ushizima, both former CTR Optimum members. Deborah Schroeder, who had also competed for CTR Optimum once, completed the lineup.

CTR Optimum in July 2021
The same NSL News update pointed out that this situation could become even more interesting if Optimum Prime decided to compete at the national outdoor championships, as well.

CTR Optimum members George Narita, Jorge Neto and Alisson Vargas began quickly to look for slot candidates in a lineup without team founder André Ferraz. They found Ricardo Pereira, who had trained and competed with Go Fly between 2018 and 2020.

There was not much time for training between the indoor meet in July and the national outdoor championships in September. There was also another top contender who did not have to deal with personnel changes. The military CISM team Cometas have been training the civilian 4-way dive pool in the past years, as well, and they increased their performance level consistently.

The male lineup of the Brazilian CISM delegation eventually finished as the runner-up at last year's national outdoor championships and were expected to challenge CTR Optimum for the top spot next time.

Optimum Prime in July 2021
It turned out that André Ferraz did not take his Optimum Prime lineup to the national outdoor championships, and the Cometas increased their performance and scoring level only slightly (14.9 - 15.1) since last year's event.

It was not enough to take the top spot away from the new CTR Optimum lineup with Ricardo Pereira, who changed their team name to INIT-Y. The short time period for the new lineup must have been very productive, as INIT-Y came back on a very similar scoring level where CTR Optimum had maintained the top spot in the past years.

Cometas finished with a new team record average (15.1) while INIT-Y's 16.3 average was very close to the average level of the previous CTR Optimum lineup. In fact, CTR Optimum have posted only one 17+ average in a 10-round meet in the team history. The new lineup with Ricardo Pereira have a very promising starting point.

Cometas remained in striking distance of the top position and even won two rounds. However, it was a 12-point difference to INIT-Y at the end, and Netunos in 3rd place were closer to the 2nd place than Cometas were to the winner. Netunos posted a new team record average, as well.
