Did You Know...

... that Alakran split the military teams on the Spanish outdoor leaderboard?

Spain's 4-way lineup in Dubai 2012
posted Oct 13th, 2021 - Teams from Spain have appeared mostly on indoor leaderboards that the NSL News has generated. One of the major indoor events, the Wind Games, has even taken place in Empuriabrava in the past years.

The national 4-way teams from Spain who participated at FAI World Championships of Formation Skydiving were naturally on all the world meet leadernboards since 1985, as well. Spain was actually a consistent factor at world meets and was represented at each event between 1985 and 2006. The following long break between 2006 and 2018 was only interrupted once when a Spanish 4-way team competed in Dubai 2012.

The participation of 38 national 4-way teams in Dubai is still the record number in the history of Formation Skydiving competition. Maria Noel Carrara Arias, Clara Marfany Mazaira, Ivan Coufal, Felix Alvarez Castano, and Segundo Garcia Perez posted the last scores for Spain at a world meet before the military Papea team resumed for Spain in Australia 2018.

In fact, the Papea team had an even earlier outdoor start on NSL leaderboards when a different lineup competed at the FAI World Cup 2017 in Saarlouis, Germany. The same lineup had also attended the Wind Games 2017 at the beginning of February the same year.

Papea had added the FAI dive pool and rules to their training agenda for CISM world championships, which is the annual event for military skydiving teams, the same one that NMP PCH HayaBusa has won 13 consecutive times since 2007.

Ivan Campos Gomez de Figueroa, Ernesto Fernandez Zaldivar, Miguel Antonio Gomez Rivas and Jose Vicente Martinez Cano, with videographer Christian Molto Gonzalez and alternate Angel Lopez Ortunio, competed at the FAI World Cup in 2017, which was team's first meet with the complete FAI dive pool in the NSL records.

Ernesto Fernandez Zaldivar and Jose Vicente Martinez Cano came back with a new lineup (Rafael Carpio Martinez, Oscar Garcia) for their first FAI World Meet in Australia 2018, still with with Christian Molto Gonzalez on camera, and they finished in 14th place with a 15.5 average.

Only videographer Christian Molto Gonzalez was back in the lineup when a new Papea team posted the recent 19.7 average at the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 in August. He was now filming Miguel Antonio Gomez Rivas, José Carlos González Herrera, Oscar Hernández, Eduardo Perruca Espinosa and Francisco Vico Lopez.

The new Papea lineup did not only finish with a new Spanish record average. The 5th place in Tanay was also the best placing for any Spanish 4-way team at FAI world championships. Several national teams did not make it to Russia for the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020, however, Papea would have finished most likely in the world's Top 10.

Papea confirmed the 19+ performance and scoring level six weeks later at Spain's national championships with a 19.1 average after the seven completed rounds in Empuriabrava.

The majority of the teams at the national outdoor championship were lineups from different military forces, and both Papea lineups finished on the top of the leaderboard. Papea stands for "Patrulla Acrobática de Paracaidismo del Ejército del Aire", the Spanish Air Force team who perform in a similar format as the Golden Knights do for the U.S. Army.

The Spanish Army had two teams on the leaderboard, the Bripac lineups. Alakran is a civilian 4-way team who have been on NSL leaderboards since 2015. They split the four military teams on the leaderboard and took the 3rd place, after a 1-point battle with the second Papea lineup.
