Did You Know...

... that USPA's new Beginner Class promises a very competitive finish?

USPA Director of Competition with Beginner Class teams and competitors
posted Oct 26th, 2021 - The USPA Nationals 2021 are in full swing at Skydive Arizona, where four Twin Otters are mastering almost 100 loads per day, filled only with 4-way teams.

The 64 teams in the four USPA 4-way categories (Open/AAA - Advanced/AAA - Intermediate/AA - Beginner/A) reflect one of the highest numbers of 4-way teams at USPA Nationals since 2004/2005 when 71/80 4-way teams attended the national championships in Perris.

The west coast event at the same place in 2017 attracted 73 teams to the 4-way events of the USPA Nationals. The last USPA Nationals before the corona virus crisis had 59 teams at Skydive Paraclete in 2019, and the 2020 event at Skydive City was canceled. The 64 teams this week in Eloy are representing a promising restart situation after the pandemic break.

Ten teams in the new Beginner Class, which is identical with the A Class of the National Skydiving League network, contribute well to the participation at this year's national championships. USPA's Director of Competition, Steve Hubbard, and Meet Director Randy Connell, met with the teams in the Beginner Class on Monday during a wind-hold and were both very pleased with the feedback.

Steve Hubbard explained already on Monday morning that he was happy with the number of registered A Class teams at the test event. The meeting later on the same day generated more additional feedback, which was also very promising for the future of new 4-way teams at USPA Nationals.

USPA's Steve Hubbard was interested in finding out whether teams who competed in the Intermediate Class (AA) before would simply step down and lower the number of teams in the traditional category. The meeting with the teams was providing evidence that most of the teams in the new Beginner Class were new at the USPA Nationals.

Most of these teams had competed at A Class meets of the NSL Network before and were now excited to become a part of USPA's national championships, as well. However, Beginner Class competitors suggested to increase the number of rounds during the meeting, as the dive pool is large enough to support up to eight rounds.

The A Class teams could not complete their scheduled six rounds on Monday due to strong and turbulent winds in the afternoon. The leaderboard is showing a very competitive situation after Round 4, which is promising an exciting battle for the first USPA medals in the remaining two rounds.
