Did You Know...

... that the new Pro Team lineup takes off at 24.3?

Finland's national indoor champions: Pro Team
posted Nov 5th, 2021 - The NSL News reported on February 18th that Matthew Iles would replace Kalle Pohjola in the Pro Team's tail slot. The former Blackjack and Blue Steel member had roughly two months to get himself ready for the first training with his new team, followed by five months of indoor training with the Pro Team.

The Pro Team has been the Finnish national indoor and outdoor champion team for many years, far ahead of all other Finnish 4-way teams. Matthew Iles had a 22.4 average in his records with Blue Steel and was facing the challenging task to prepare himself for the 26+ average that the Pro Team posted twice in their scoring history.

Event judge Jukka Olkkonen said that it seemed throughout the first half of the competition that the new Pro Team lineup might finish with a new national 10-round record average. It did not happen in the end, however, the 24.3 average is a great and promising starting point.

Matthew Iles lifted his own performance and scoring level from 21.6 average with Blue Steel at last year's national indoor championships by more than two average points.

Pro Team - Tribe at the Finnish Indoor Nationals 2021
Pro Team at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019
Matthew Iles' former Blackjack (Vesa Vuorenkoski) and Blue Steel (Jorma Löfgren, Otto Virkki) team mates, were back at the indoor championships with their own new team. Riku Peltola, Vesa Vuorenkoski's team mate with Just4fun/Siskon Pojat, completed the new Tribe lineup.

Tribe actually matched Matthew Iles' scoring progression, after posting a 19.5 average at the first restart meet of the Finnish Tunnel League in September this year. The 21.8 average is also significantly higher only six weeks later.

The Finnish 4-way teams had the opportunity of six indoor meets at the Fööni wind tunnel in Helsinki between September 2019 and September 2020 before a 1-year interruption. Two teams were back for the restart in September this year, and five teams attended the new indoor championships at the end of last month.

The Pro Team had not visited Helsinki for any of the indoor meets since November 2019, when they still trained and competed with Kimmo Pohjola's son Kalle in the tail slot. New tail Matthew Iles lives in Helsinki, while the other three members travel from Rovaniemi in Lapland to Helsinki for indoor training and competition.

Pro Team at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019
Matthew Iles and Vesa Vuorenkoski with Blackjack
The Pro Team with Matthew Iles made the trip this year to win back the Finnish indoor title that Just4fun/Siskon Pojat won in October 2020 in the absence of the country's strongest 4-way team. The Pro Team had competed for Finland at the FAI Indoor World Meet 2019 and also at the FAI Outdoor World Cup the same year.

The new Pro Team lineup plans to compete at next year's FAI Indoor World Cup and European Indoor Championship in Charleroi, Belgium, and the qualification for the event was obviously not an obstacle. In fact, the Finnish national team had plans all the way through the next indoor world meet in 2023.

Current team members Eija Suvala and Kimmo Pohjola have Pro Team world meet outdoor experiences of Menzelinsk 2010, and the complete lineup with Kalle Pohjola attended the indoor world meet at Weembi Lille in 2019.

New member Matthew Iles goes even several years further back in time. He and his former Blackjack team mate Vesa Vuorenkoski competed together for Finland in Turkey 1997. There were no indoor competitions at that time...
