Did You Know...

... that Airbus Oceanside Illertissen completed over 80 jumps in DeLand last month?

Oceanside AtomiX at the German Nationals 2019
posted Dec 3rd, 2021 - The NSL News covered the exciting race for the 4-way outdoor championship title in Germany with a few previews and the actual event story on September 10th. Defending 4-way champion Oceanside AtomiX and challenger Airbus Illertissen eventually created a 4-way drama at the national championship that will be remembered for a while.

Oceanside AtomiX took a 1-point lead in Round 5 that they maintained and even increased to three points throughout Round 9. Then came the Super Sequence in Round 10 (B,F,D,E,A) and the 3-point lead turned into a 7-point deficit when everything was said and done.

It was a very unhappy ending for AtomiX, who missed their new attempt to compete for Germany at an FAI World Championship of Formation Skydiving. The team's 2019 lineup had won the qualification for the FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 at the German Outdoor Nationals 2019 by nine points over the previous Airbus lineup with coach Solly Williams filling an open slot.

Both teams' lineups changed in 2020, and Oceanside AtomiX eventually withdrew from participating at the world meet in Tanay, Russia, due to the implications of the corona virus crisis. However, Germany's next national championship, a month after the missed world meet, was the new opportunity to qualify for the next world meet in Eloy 2022. The dramatic finish in Round 10 then brought back Airbus to the national 4-way top spot that the team franchise had owned for many years before AtomiX.

Airbus Illertissen - Oceanside AtomiX at the German Outdoor Nationals 2021
Airbus Illertissen at the German Nationals 2019
The FAI Tanay Mondial 2020 in August this year took place without any German participation in Formation Skydiving competition, and Airbus will compete for the country next October at Skydive Arizona.

Airbus did not hesitate to begin soon with planning and preparations for the next world meet. Indoor training will be the main tool for the German winter season, beginning this month, and it will keep the team consistently in training action until April.

However, Airbus launched the preparations for 2022 with outdoor training at Skydive DeLand in Florida before switching to indoor as soon as they return to Germany. The outdoor season in Central Europe is over, while the fall weather in Florida still offers great training opportunities.

Airbus had another important reason to train in DeLand, even though Oceanside has begun sponsoring the new German national 4-way team. The new lineup reconnected with Solly Williams, who was the Airbus player-coach when Oceanside AtomiX won the title in 2019. Solly Williams lives in DeLand and has been working with several different Airbus lineups in the past.

Solly Williams was not in Germany when the new lineup, with the youngest team member Felix Pfeiffer, won the dramatic battle with Oceanside AtomiX this year. Airbus have been working with coach Marco Arrigo in Europe, who will take back the team with the beginning of the winter season.

Airbus still wanted Solly Williams' input at the beginning of the new training period, and they completed over 80 jumps in the week they spent in Florida. They plan to use the technical guidelines by Solly Williams for the Airbus continuity in the coming world meet year.

Airbus did not only take the German 4-way title from AtomiX this year. They also added Oceanside to their team name Airbus Illertissen. Skydive Paranodon is located in the town of Illertissen, where the team will once again run their outdoor training next year.

Former Swiss and German 4-way competitor Mike Vetter also invited the new German national 4-way team to train at Oceanside, and Airbus have agreed to visit California in April next year for the first time. They plan another training camp at Oceanside right before the world meet. The NSL News met with the new lineup to discuss team history and plans at the end of the DeLand training.
